U.S.S Cygnus 1/700 scale… a study in insanity

On a quick side note. I failed to see this MPC Cygnus offering at Modelpalooza this year. The venue was set up to where the ‘Display Only’ models were at the front wall. It must have shown up late on Saturday morning and I never went by that table but once. I lifted the pictures from a YouTube video. The funny thing is that this one has one too many sections in the center. Wished I could’ve talked to the model’s owner about that. I’ll try to do better next year.

Thanks for the kind words and the Palomino pictures. I grew up in Orlando and my wife worked for Disney the first 11 years of our marriage. We made one trip to the studio park but had to leave early because of a prior commitment. I find out decades later that the Black Hole hero models (except Cygnus) were on display out there. I was annoyed about that. The pictures will help when I build my big Palomino. I’ll find the scale but I think it’s 1/196 scale. It was sold at Kremmen’s shop at the former Shapeways. This is the guy who is the guy who helped with Primitive Dave develope Cygnus.View attachment 1875553View attachment 1875554View attachment 1875555
This Palomino is 1/192 scale.

While I have stalled out on remaking the power box, I have made a couple of acquisitions. There is a vendor on ETSY who specializes in SciFi Helmets. He offered a Black Hole Sentry Robot helmet, pre finished. Couldn’t pass that up.

Well, well, well (to quote Bill Cipher), I had mentioned this Cygnus back in the day on my MPC Cygnus thread because I liked the way it ‘popped’ out at you. It seems this guy is still making them (on and off). I bought his most recent one. I know my limitations when painting things and the MPC version is a big one…why do you think I spent all that time mentioned earlier in that thread trying to do what I did. Model looks good for the shelf but I think I’m going to tweak some of the body work.

Several things have happened since my last posting. I have a display case now (still figuring out if I want to paint or stain the base), and have the new seamless (except for the battery drawer) power box. Have worked out the access door in the case. Also, I might have a lead on a Probe Ship and Palomino for my Cygnus model. Will probably be posting more over Christmas.

Not sure how I missed this, but the title says it all, this is absolutely insane!

I love it!

I remember watching the Black Hole in the theater and really liked the plot. Kinda too bad that it fell into the background against all the other great Sci-Fi works at the time. I feel that V.I.N.cent fit the role "clever robot hero / Human's best friend" even better than the at the time R2-D2. Good luck on finding a Palomino, that will really be a great addition. In case you haven't already found them, there are two STL for free download (.STL is the file-type for printable 3D files):

The first is a bit clunky and would need rendering/greebles to make it look good. The second one seems to be a 3d scan from 2D pictures, so a bit of 3D rendering will be needed to correct all the faults, but it looks to be a nice resolution. I looked at the author's other files, and he seems to have some add-ons for the Cygnus as well.

Greetings Pixelworks, thanks for the Palomino goodies. There are a couple of leads that I’ll be following in the next couple of weeks. I am happy using the narrative “This is Cygnus about six hours before the events of the movie”. Got to get past the holiday season in one piece.

Okay folks, I seemed to have gotten a lead on my missing Palomino and Probe ship. More to come on that subject when things come into reality. I’ve finished with the new battery/switch box and have completed the access door. Pictures soon. On a personal note, yesterday was the second anniversary of me and my dear Monique finding out that the pain she was having was not from a surgical mishap but stage four cancer. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were probably the most difficult days that we had in our marriage. However, she was gone 24 days later. Things are somewhat better now, but my Phsycologist (who lost her husband three years ago) uses the term ‘manageable’. This project has been a good diversion and I want to thank all of you who have commented and left emojis. Below is a picture of Monique in 93, during a trip to London (I was home in Florida). Later that evening, she had the chalk drawing done. Best gift she ever gave me. I know this is a modeling thread, I’ll be back to more Cygnus stuff during Christmas. I still have that scarf

Beautiful and talented partner you have there, Merry Christmas, and F Cancer.

Thank you, when we dated in the 80’s she informed me that she did not expect to live to be an old woman (she was 58). She reminded me of that during her first calm moment. Angio Sarcoma is one of those pesky Cancers that has no test and is in your DNA ‘from the factory’. Very rare and super aggressive. Here’s a better picture with her eyes open.

Well, I got the pesky excessive wire packed into the new power box. I had to insert a divider piece of plastic in the box next to the drawer. The height of the divider pushes all the wires up so that they don’t get behind the drawer. I had to add a post to the access hatch because the acrylic ball I originally added slip from my fingers. The hatch installs from the inside (don’t ask) and I’ve had it fall onto my ship’s base several times…fortunately no damage. Still debating stain or paint for the case base.
