UPDATE* BOUGHT IT -So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Hell, if I knew a place was 'haunted', I wouldn't live there...I just don't like things I can't explain or control.

Putting that aside, this is your dream.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

1. I were in your shoes, I'd buy it.

2. I'd ask the owner to let me go through all the stuff with him, just like in the office, and make sure that anything I wanted was included in the sale.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

if I had the cash i would buy it as well. hire real ushers, velvet stations..the whole classic movie experience. alas...it will become a money pit and not enough people go to see older films.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Ghosts are real but I'd buy it if you think the price is right and you can do something with it.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

I'd say go for it! You've always wanted one, and this is your chance (possibly one and only)

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

I'd say buy it and call in some favors from your industry contacts and get a TV show about renovating it.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Oh man, you are gonna have the ultimate home theatre!

We live in a place where a guy died. I welcomed him as a proud member of my family and reminded him his chore is to keep solicitors away. He's slipping, but we love him anyway.

I would suggest installing fire extinguishers every 5 feet and remember to aim at the base of the fire.

I'd have it really inspected. My neighbor has a late 1800's victorian which took half a million to fix the foundation and renovate. That was with a lot of sweat-equity and he's still fine tuning it.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

I would snap it up, Love old theatres and the fact that it could be "haunted" really adds to it, would love to investigate a place like that myself.
Restore most of it, have private viewings and maybe tours of the haunted spots.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Buy it and put a Hot-tub there.

It will placate the spirits!

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

As I usually do I say have an architect look at it, and definitely speak with your local fire department, to see what´s the least you have to do when want to live in there and be a patron, so that you don´t get haunted by the public authorities.
I can imagine that fire regulations might be really important.

Other than that...

WHERE ARE THE PICS ?!

I love old movie theaters, and when I did location scouting for a movie on Romy Schneider two years ago, I had to find an old movie theater. As one could imagine, not many movie palaces have survived the down sizing of the 1970ies.

One did survice and still is showing movies

but one, from the 1920ies, almost even more beautiful than the above one

and now it´s a book store.

From an investor´s view point it´s an okay compromise, but IMO not a necessary one.

So, you can always use it differently, but if you don´t need to make any money from it, then go for it.

Can anyone say "cool RPF prop party location" ?! :p

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

To me, it would all be about business and ROI. What would you do with it, how much would you have to invest to do it and how long would it take (in this economy)to become profitable? For me, the whole 'ghost' thing is a great big whatever unless you are hoping to go with some type of 'haunted' theater angle, which could be cool. Something like the Shining. However, if you are looking at turning this into a profitable theater, I think you have an uphill battle ahead of you. Maybe more of a meeting and conference hall with a cool vibe? The question truly is all about the return.

EDIT: In skimming over your initial post, I missed the part about you wanting to make it a place to live. OK, that is awesome! Don't worry about the 'ghosts.' If you have the money, go for it!

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

It looks like this is going to happen. i got a call from the owner about an hour ago offering an even cheaper deal if I purchase before the end of May. He's also offered a restored projector and tells me the draw curtains are in storage and will be rehung with the pulley mechanism reinstalled. Wooo Hoo! Not much, but to me it sweetens the pot pretty good. I told him I'd meet him on Wednesday to click off some pics and look the place over with my cousins.

and Art, this entire endeavor has no gain in it for me. i expect to lose a bit of money for something I've always wanted - like buying a boat. The screenings will be free - I may charge for popcorn and sodas - also want to work something out with the BAR-B-QUE people down the way. It's just fun - and one day when I run out of money I'll be stuck with a haunted theatre lol. This is all for the love of movies - nothing more. I'll also be able to offer a place for schools to show movies (which is something I experienced as a kid) - we used to go on field trips and see Charlotte's Web and stuff like that.
