Vader helmet paint question.

WOW PnatheraGem. that looks great...

I noticed that you moved to Wellington CTF, try and get a gig at Weta. :D I still miss the old town, but I don't have any reason to go back now that my family have moved on or passed away. Thanks for you compliment on Vader, he's about to go through a major upgrade (that's if stuff I buy doesn't keep going missing in the post :unsure )

Cheers,

Kraig

So here is what I've done with what started out as a raw cast.... Let me know what you think. I just finished this a few hours ago. I'm not an artist, and I don't claim to be. This was just a labor of love. :love

Thanks. Yep, all handbrushed. I didn't use the touch-up paint like I was going to originally. Believe it or not I wound up using some really cheap waterbased acrylics. It's a mix of three different colors.

Hi There,

Have you guys heard that the colour used for the ANH Vader helmets &/or armour was gunmetal grey from BMW in 1975?.

Well, this is how it should be done... :thumbsup :thumbsup

I would like to see some pics incl dome as well.

You did a GREAT job. :thumbsup

Thank you guys. :) I will take some pictures with the dome soon. I wanted to make sure I got some pictures before I put the Velcro patch on the forehead for the dome. In the meantime here's some more of the facemask solo.

Actually I haven't heard this....where did you hear it? That would be interesting to look into if that's the case.

Very nice work PnatheraGem....can't wait to see it with the helmet on :thumbsup

Very nice looking. Any chance of getting a breakdown of the colors used in the mix and their mix-ratio?

I like the brushed look, very authentic. :thumbsup

I have heard before that it was a Mercedes color also. (I think Mercedes is what you meant Kraig, 'cause to us Yanks Merc means "Mercury"). :lol

Whoops, sorry, Mercedes is what I meant, we call them Mercs down here. Thanks for picking that up PnatheraGem, that could've lead to a wild goose chase. I can't remember where I heard that to be honest, but it was a few years ago.

Sure. They are FolkArt paints and can be found at craft stores here in the States for pretty cheap. I got these on sale for 79 cents a bottle. The colors I used are "661 Metallic Sequin Black", "667 Metallic Gunmetal Gray", "506 Silver Anniversary".

The mix I used was (I think I'm saying this right....) two parts the black, one part the gunmetal, one part the silver.

I was worried about using the waterbase stuff, but this dries remarkably tough. I didn't use a sealer and I've been abusing some test panels that have had the paint drying on them for a few weeks. They hold up very well. Only after soaking them and putting brush soap all over it does it seem to scratch off. Should be cool unless I decide to leave my helmet sitting out in the elements for a stretch. :p

I remember hearing that here for sure. I can't remember who said it and how much weight it carried though. Would still be interesting to see what the color looks like exactly.

Well here are some not so great pics of how it looks with the dome. Funny how big a difference the lighting conditions make on the appearance of the gunmetal. Some it looks light, some it looks dark. There are more pictures of it here; http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m294/Pantheragem2/Raw/ I will take pictures of it on my life-size sometime soon.

It's a long way from this. And yes I had a lot of help with the cleanup from a friend.
