Watch out for this buyer -this does take the fun out of making stuff

This sucks -
In years of selling on Etsy almost all my customers have been very nice and understanding if there are any issues. Every once in a while you get people who just don't read or understand the description (especially since Etsy seems to go out of its way to make the description hard to find and read). Even the very few aggressive customers I've had had ultimately been nice once I calmly explain the options.

I guess I've been lucky overall. Really sorry you had to deal with this guy. No need to talk with him again fortunately.

If this were on ebay, you could report him and it would go on his record, to many dings and his account would be restricted. Plus they would protect you from any bad feedback as long as you handle everything professionally. I don't know if etsy has anything like that but you could try reporting him and see if they will do anything about it, like suspend his account. I'd like to see how he plans to make your life a living hell, who's going to care what he says?

This might be the guy Jack Munday

his facebook page says Jack Munday from Rockwall, TX You should send him a Friends request

Good find, based on his wife’s name (which was whom the package was addressed to) this is absolutely the right Jack.

His posts are pretty much the same grammar and typos as his communications with me.

Consider me surprised, I was sure Jack had to be a 12 year old with not enough adult supervision.

Okay, so a couple of housekeeping items:
  1. I've been selling on eBay and Etsy for about 15 years
  2. I offer a money back guarantee on all items
  3. I do not believe I'm the best builder out there, nor do I believe that my items are perfect
  4. I'm proud of the work that I do and make sure my pieces are accurately described with pictures
  5. I base my pricing on demand and what I want to make to justify my time
  6. I don't need the money, this is a hobby
  7. 95% of my customers are wonderful, and the other 5% aren't worth getting upset about.
That all said, this recent Etsy interaction stands out. The buyer's name is Jack Munday and his mailing address is in Rockwall, TX. He joined Etsy in March of this year, so no buying or selling record. I've searched a few popular websites and don't see any obvious hits, so I think he's probably a young keyboard warrior.

Complete conversation below, draw your own conclusions. Thanks for letting me (mostly) vent and if this guy contacts you, or tries to buy from you, I suggest you run in the opposite direction.

Addendum -no, I did not refund his money.

I don’t know...

He makes reference to things going bad for you on “the social media”. Look at those words again. Not “social media”, mind you, but “THE social media”. He’s clearly covered all of his bases and has boundless power at his will.

He also sounds like a very well put together, sophisticated, and highly intelligent individual; not one to be trifled with.

I would give him whatever he wants—and then some—before this escalates further and he threatens to “go to all the Twitters” about this.

;)

I seriously doubt ebay does any kind of enforcement. You see power sellers with hundreds of negatives in a year and they are still on there selling because it makes ebay money. The first 10 years or so that ebay was around they were helpful, now it's too big.

Usually if I misread something I will either just bite the bullet and take the hit because it was my fault, or I will at least politely ask the seller if I could get a refund. This guy just went 0 to nuts instantly.

I'll be honest, if I buy something and don't get what I expect I go re-look at the description... if it was my mistake I suck it up because that's what adults do. If a person doesn't bother to read the description it's hard to feel too much sympathy. It's a pity Etsy gave him a refund to make this go away. I know it's easier for them but they just screwed the next Etsy seller he pulls this crap on.

Stinks. I've been on etsy for 11 years and most interactions have been positive. I did have one buyer whose item was damaged in shipping and his first message back to me was I better send him a refund or he would leave me the worst review I'd ever seen! I never understand the people that go from zero to outrage in 1 second. Sent him a refund and tried to forget.

"I will not send this piece of crap back, you will refund my money or I will make your life a living hell."

I've been fortunate enough to actually meet a few people like this in my lifetime. They're not easy to find these days. Online anonymity is a safe, comfortable place to perform without repercussions. But when you do meet them in person; eye-contact is all that's needed to get them to cooperate with civility. Strange how that happens.

Snow Builder, I wouldn't worry about this fine individual, Karma's on the way. And your work is fantastic.

But I have to say...Etsy's covered refund is just as bad as this person's attitude. It's those kinds of policies that fuel this kind of behavior. Disappointing.

Wow, what a nasty piece of work.
He isn't representative of all Star Trek fans, just one bad Tribble in the group.
Sorry to hear of your bad experience.
He clearly wants the prop and his money, so essentially something for free.
What an idiot.

Based on his FB it looks like he barely knows how to work The Social Media!

Yep, Etsy dropped the ball on that one...and many others, I'm afraid. They're like Ebay, they won't police bad sellers anymore because of...wait for it: MONEY:rolleyes::rolleyes: so, yeah...buyer's beware and seller's beware: old adage but still working today, right?

The buyer is the equivalent of a bald tribble that can’t reproduce. He has to make a lot of noise to get attention and feel important.

Ebay does protect sellers from bad buyers and chronic returners and they have removed negative feedbacks for me on a case by case basis. They track bad buyers internally and will restrict or suspend accounts. They also automatically remove negative feedbacks quarterly, if the seller honored their return policy, they disclose this to you in your quarterly review.
