What makes Halo.HALO

The first what?? Am I really this old? I remember Castle Wolfenstein, and DOOM. A lesser known footnote would be Rise of the Triad (ROTT), one of my favorites.

LOL, I said the same thing!
I was thinking to myself - "Halo, the first FPS??!!....Im ipretty sure Wolfenstein,DOOM,l Unreal, Duke Nukem came out at least 10 years before Halo....Hell, Medal of Honor, Dark Forces, Quake, Half Life, came out before Halo.

Those were great FPS games, but they did not have multiplayer.

I have to differ .

Around the early 90s I was playing Doom/Quake (Cant remember) multiplayer with a group of people on a computer network at my friends old job (He worked for a medical supply company and they let him use the office after hours to play mutliplayer games.).

We were even able to wear headphones , and my friend was also able to create a map based on the floorplan of the office building we were in.

Speaking of that, I caught a mistake in Birth of a Spartan on the med screen showing vital stats it says Spartan Class III.

No, it's correct. The spartans in this game (except Jorge) are III's. Can't recall where I read it, but the armor that they wear in this were created by a private company as well.

Yeah the designation means commercially produced. Basically the ones in Reach are the Mk V versions of the Rogue armor Mk-VI in Halo 3.

What makes halo to me?

"You face opponents who have never known defeat, who laugh in alien tongues at your efforts to survive. This is suicide."

I have high hopes for Legendary mode in Reach.:cool

Don't forget about Marathon. That was an early multiplayer FPS. Also made by Bungie. The first one came out in the mid 90's I think.

I must be even older because for me most of my memories of Castle Wolfenstein, are not FPS, but instead a birds eye view of rooms in a maze...

Wait, what? I knew they were revising their own mythology but I didn't know they were revising it THAT much :lol Yeesh... yet again, this is truly why I hate prequels regardless of if it's books, comics, movies or video games. It just gets my geek-obsessive-compulsive-nature all riled up :p

Yea, they put III's on Reach, but it takes place on the opposite side of the planet from where masterchief is conducting operations. I haven't read ghosts of Onyx yet, so I can really go too deep with it.

In terms of comparison to other FPSs, my observation is that Halo, especially later on as other shooters gained popularity, didn't really do anything revolutionary or different than what others were doing. What made Halo stand out is that the things it did do, it did very well. Which, by all accounts, they're continuing with Reach.

Unfortunately, I never did finish all the games. I've beat Halo 1, and got up to the Flood portion of Halo 2 (I.... HATE.... Flood levels). I've got Halo 3, and I've played online with it, but never played the single-player campaign. Also never played ODST, and I'll probably wait until I finish the rest before I pick up Reach.

I do like the storyline, though, which is why I play them. Shooters aren't really my thing these days, but I do appreciate a good story.

Well that is odd. But it may be plausible, "maybe" depends on the years:

Fall of Reach beginning in 2517 describing events up to 2552.

Ghost of Onyx: The story begins with a group of SPARTAN-IIIs being deployed to a Covenant fleet refueling depot in the year 2545. The soldiers destroy the facility, but all save two of the three hundred SPARTAN IIIs are killed.

The narrative then moves back to 2531, where SPARTAN-IIs are deployed against human insurrectionists; Kurt joins Johns team

Doesn't mean we can't enjoy it!

To me there is a strategy to Halo that other console FPS's lack. In Halo you have wide open spaces to navigate (most of the time) and different angles of attack for most of your encounters. The wide range of weapon types and enemy AI that will act differently each time you run into it makes it impossible to get the same exact experience out of the same level twice. Now, granted I like me some COD, but that game is entirely based on who can draw the quickest bead when heads start popping out of cover. With Halo you have the oft quoted trifecta of approaches to a fight, with multiple grenade types, melee, and two different guns at any given time. The quickest headshot doesn't matter so much as the ability to adapt to your enemy.
Also... I like to shoot aliens.

:)

I also think Halo has the most balanced weapons/shield system of any FPS I've played. There is no "n00b tube" in Halo. Yes there are grenade/rocket launchers and such but they are counterbalanced.

I would beg to differ..lets not forget the noob combo in Halo 2 (Plasma Pistol and Battle Rifle)
