Why is IKEA so hard to deal with DETOLF shelf

Oh @#$%.... I'm moving in a month and a half potentially into a larger place, time to stock up on more Detolfs.

Latest Detolf in a movie sighting, the movie "Grandma's Boy", the Detolfs are in a video game company that the main character works at. Pretty cool.

Just hit the new IKEA in Michigan this week. Bought 2 Detolf cases and another shelf unit for DVD's. I love this store.

i believe the detolf is still 59 bucks. There is a variation of the detolf that has the glass shelving standing on a small table which is 99 dollars (and makes no sense to me price wise).

I live 75 miles away from ikea and the detolf i purchased had a warped glass pane rendering the door useless. After driving all the way back to idea, they had a minion run to the back and drag out a new detolf unit and took the door out of that box. I'm wondering what they did with the rest of the glass. Seems like such a waste.

360 miles from an IKEA :(

Was told that the IKEA in Atlanta is in the downtown area a few blocks from the Marriot where Dragoncon is held each year. So you guys driving in to the con might want to make a IKEA detour before heading back out on the road.

They sometimes use those opened boxes for spare parts, just in case other customers have a problem. IKEA usually is very generous when it comes to replacement parts. For example, if you lose a few screws due to moving places etc., you usually get them replaced for free. The same goes for other bits and pieces. My gf still has the envelope from the time a single screw was sent from Sweden as a replacement part. Pretty funny IKEA item ;) And no, I do NOT collect IKEA :lol

DOH.

185.3 miles (one way) from Ikea.

We made the trip and I got (2) of the Detolf display cases. They were $59.99 on 07/30 when we got them.

I'm getting (2) more on the next trip.

I went to Chicago this week end to Wizard World. I stopped by Ikea and picked up two of them. They were still 59.95 here.

They did not come with any lights though. Where do I get the lights for them and how much do they cost?

I have 7 of them and the closest IKEA to me is outside Chicago. They told me they would not ship DETOLF shelves because they are all glass, very heavy and have had a history of them not arriving safely. So me and the Wife went up there one weekend (just 2 hour drive) in my SUV and picked them up. Yes they weigh 89 pounds and I am no weakling, however the size of the boxes are very awkward and with the weight, yes a two person carry is essential IMHO.
They look great and are PERFECT for props. Wish there was a way to make the shelving adjustable. I will have to look into those LED lamps, I have halogen right now.

Yeah I was down from Chattanooga at the Atlanta Ikea about 3 weeks ago, I picked up a pair of those new display cabinets with the slanted top, their Detolf's were still 59.99 in Hotlanta 3 weeks ago.

The store is very easy to find, take the 17th street exit off I-75 , head westbound on 17th street the store is about a mile down the road on the right, you can't miss it.

Score, I am going to pick up two more when I move in a month and a half. I'm about 10 minutes away from the Schaumburg IKEA.

That really stinks that the Seattle IKEA price jumped $20.00 and it hasn't happened anywhere else. I wonder if it is because I went there the day after their latest catalog came out...Hmmm...

For those wanting the light, I got the NON, which is a halogen and I was worried about the heat coming off of it, but the display unit at the store had a light and I checked it out since it was on and it really wasn't that hot. In fact I accidentally left mine on all night the first night and checked it and it was fine.

Anyway...I LOVE mine....

Eagle:

How did you get that extra shelving inside, mine only has the three shelves?

Thanks.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I just got two pieces of tempered glass cut to size, bought some aluminium rod and lashed them to the existing frame. The lashing was then 'sealed' with spray paint to match the colour. :)

I love my new shelves. May as well add to the posting pic fun. It was very tricky getting the big guy Sauron to fit in there. ;)

Ikea is the biggest "recaster" out there
They steal there designs from already made well design items and are even proud about it. But they sure don't make there items like the originals, they use "more affordable materials" blah
You get what you pay for with them. Cheap knock offs.

There's some karma for you in Spain.
I was on holiday there once, and we took an organised trip. One of the things we passed on the journey was an Ikea, and the guide said something like:
"Ah, Ikea. Very nice furniture, but very expensive. Not everyone can afford their things. What we do here is to get the catalogue and show it to a local carpenter. He makes the same thing, a table or some shelves, exactly the same for cheaper."

Anyhow, I live quite near an Ikea (Lakeside in Essex) and have lusted after those shelves for years, but getting them back to my too-small home in a hatchback with other stuff & three people just ain't happening.
And the park & load area is a total nightmare unless you're the... assertive type. Just love those families of fatties in people-carriers who park in the yellow cross-hatched area whilst they sort out the seating so's the vehicle doesn't tip over. Makes that 90deg reverse-park SO much of an extra challenge. :angry

Up until the Atlanta store opened, I had to drive to Houston or DC to visit Ikea (from St. Pete, Florida). Since Atlanta opened I've been there twice (my sister live there, which is convenient). But next year they're suppose to open a store in Orlando which is only 1.5 hours away. So I'm excited, but then it will become common place and nut such a big deal. A south Florida store is also scheduled for next year.

To date, I've been to the following Ikea's: Atlanta, Houston, DC (twice), Chicago, Philadelphia, San Diego, Burbank, Nottingham (UK) and London. Yep, my wife and I are nuts.
