WHY should I watch Dr. Who? (I never have)

I've still not seen any of the new stuff, because I am slightly put off by the high production values and the pretty boy doctors, but I'm willing to give it a shot. The most successful original Drs were never pretty, they were either eccentric grandfather types (Pertwee), or freaks (Baker).

Check out Matt Smith - he's both grandfatherly and a freak, despite being the youngest doctor cast.

I once had the same question.

Then in 2005 the new series was starting and I thought i'd give it shot, surely all those people on the board can't be wrong.

They weren't.

I've been hooked and haven't missed an episode since :)

If you want the question answered, just watch.

I would suggest you go to the 2005 new episodes and watch the two parter "the lonely child" and "the doctor dances" ... if you really like those two, then go to the first episode of 2005 and watch it from the beginning. The first episode is an origin episode of how the doctor meet Rose.

Every single person that I have showed those two episodes to has been hooked on Dr. Who, seriously, it is an awesome show.

IMHO I think you'll enjoy the show more if you see those two first instead of starting with the 1st episode. The 1st origin episode is better if you're already hooked on the show.

Yeah, the first episode of the new series might not be as good as a hook. Or maybe it's just because I find the Autons one of the stupider villain concepts on Who. ;)

:lol Hands off the 11th Doctor, he's absolutely brilliant, the best ever ! Well IMO of course :rolleyes

Aye... Love how he is kind of the 2nd and 7th mixed. Love how Steven brought it back to great story and writing. Russel just "wrote good TV" and had way too many holes in story's, and some lines were like throwing a scrabble game on the ground and just putting letters together.

Another reason to watch.... River Song!!! (still hoping it turns out to be Rani instead of where everyone thinks it's going... LOL)

Also, give the series a few eps, if the Chris one don't do it for you for a few eps, try the next season for a few eps. British shows are bit different to US shows. So, if you actually watch BBCAmerica and enjoy the shows, then you'll like Dr. Who.

Well, as the counterpoint to that, her space suit was really just a race car driver with a fancy helmet. Nowhere near as cool as Tennant's space suit.

Yeah? Tennant's spacesuit was identified long ago as an off-the-shelf thing they modded. I'll give you his helmet is cooler, based on the Australian mining gear as it is, but me, I like River Song's better just by virtue of it not being orange.

A lot of what you all are saying is beyond me. BUT, I'm gonna try it. I'm gonna start next weekend. NOT THIS WEEKEND. But next weekend with the 2005 series.

All because Larry chimed in. :lol:lol:lol

hahahaha LOVE IT! I am getting Art to start a SUB form called LARRY YOUNG so you and I can talk about how AWESOME you are!

IMO River Song is a reason to STOP watching. I can't stand her.

Loved her in Silence of the Library but now she's just an arrogant character that I wish would go away. She's overused and they took her character in the wrong direction.

As for why to watch?

Alien in a blue box travels through time and space saving the universe... What's not to love?

I personally love the orange, and the modifications made were extensive enough I think to make it cool. The helmet is actually modified from an industrial respirator helmet from the UK. I've had one sitting around for ages, I need to get on that. But regardless, I agree with the other points about River.

Naw, I gotcha. My anti-orange bias is just from the pervasiveness of the look, from RW shuttle suits and ARMAGEDDON and whatnot. Orange just says to me folks aren't trying very hard.

Yeah? Just looks like knit cuffs on the wrist and a Black Diamond climbing harness, to me.

UK, yeah? The only place I could ever source it was in Melbourne. If you have one just laying around, I'd be happy to give you US$300 for it. Or you could tell me who in the UK sells it. :) Otherwise, I have to get zenix to stop messing around with Green Lantern rings and scale up that 12" figure for me in 3D prototyping. :)
