Working on a DALEK. Finished the dome lights. MAY 18th 2011

Re: Working on a DALEK.

What a fun project!
Cool TARDIS as well. Odd though, how we don't see any of the "children" in any pictures... Unless that is one in between the Dalek and TARDIS?
LOL.

Seriously, very cool.

Re: Working on a DALEK.

This project is really cool!!!

Fantastic and thank you for showing us the pics!!! :thumbsup

Re: Working on a DALEK.

I'm on a very low budget, basicaly nothing.. Unemployed stay at home dad. I am using what i can find, and this thing is only for my kids to play with. it is not going on display or anything, and who said I was going for a smooth finish, a damaged beat up dalek looks cool.

Anyway thanks for all the kind words. when i buil my showcase piece I will use better material. But for a kids play thing this will do fine.
Nice to meet another poor stay at home dad! Yeah, I know exactly what it's like when you have no money and you try to make things out of whatever you have lying around.

This is what I made my Daughter for her Birthday - mostly out of an old Ikea bed:

(Big thanks to Rebelscum Philip for helping me out with the Police Box signs!)

Sure, it's not to scale. Things could be better (I'm still not happy with the roof) but my Daughter loves it and that's all what matters really!

I totaly understand, I am not happy with anything I have built, But I try and remember I did it for my kids, and they love it all. And some times kids can be the biggest critics, so if my kids love it then it must be good.
I love the Tardis, I can not wait to get started on my lighting system for my kids one.

Re: Working on a DALEK.

Excellent job! I like it. If I had the room I'd totally be building one of these too. :thumbsup

Re: Working on a DALEK.

Dad of the Decade for sure! The Dalek looks great and I'm loving the TARDIS. I have some friends who I think are planning to build a permanent one in their living room. (I wouldn't mind one myself...)

If you start work on a K-9, definitely post your progress. A Whovian family is one heckuva cool family, I say. :)

Can you believe the lights behind Police Box signs are from Poundland!? (UK equivalent of Dollar Tree or 99 cents stores, which seem to sell the same tat!)

Basically Poundland's version of these:

(Poundland's version has 5 LEDs instead of just 3)
I dismantled them and wired them so they'd all work from one main power source operated from a single switch.

As for the top light, you could use one of these:

I actually used a real light bulb in mine which I dismantled and put a blue LED in. The stick-up light bulb is much safer though.

Re: Working on a DALEK.

You guys are great. Both these builds are crazy and fun and, in some instances, a bit random but totally fantastic as they're just about making family happy and nothing to do with being crazy detail freaks.

Who cares they're not smooth or perfectly to plan. They make kids smile and that's all that matters!

Bravo, both of you! :)

Re: Working on a DALEK.

That is really cool. I wish I had the space/skills to attempt something like that!

Re: Working on a DALEK.

I just moved into a place with a walk in closet, so I'm thinking of turning the door into the exterior of the TARDIS. It wouldn't be that difficult, but I need the time and money to do so.

Re: Working on a DALEK.

Oh a K-9 is in the works for next year, already started on the plans.
Strangely enough, after I've built the console for the TARDIS (my Daughter's Christmas present!) I was going to build a K-9 but instead I've been persuaded to make a Dalek as there's a local Dalek charity fundraiser club that need more people with Daleks. Plus there's the odd perk like getting into sci-fi conventions for free!

I normally work on classic car electrical systems but I also do metalwork too so I'm going to make some of the detail parts like the dome from sheet steel.

Re: Working on a DALEK.

Holy crap, not only does the cat have a thing out for the dog, the Rhoomba kept coming right at him!

Re: Working on a DALEK.

I had been working on the Dalek eye using a shower head, but honestly that was way to small, it looked good and would of worked on a smaller scale Dalek. So I had to scrap that and start again. It is not exactly accurate, but I don't mind. I like adding my own style to the things I build. Hope you enjoy.

Re: Working on a DALEK.

Thanks, I am redoing the eye, it does look great from the front, but honestly "WHAT WAS I THINKING?! from the sid eit looks crap!... will be working on it over the long weekend.
