Ant-Man

I hope that means there's some Ultron involvement in the Ant-Man movie. It'd be a shame to remove Ultron from Ant-Man's story entirely.

me too. I'm hoping Pym worked with Howard Stark to make the early Ultron, or programmed the original Jarvis if Jarvis goes evil. Also it sounds like they might reference why Pym and Janet weren't founding Avengers

Wouldn't be surprised if they sneak in Douglas as Hank Pym into AoU somehow, even if just a cameo (certainly better than a passing mention). Just would seem like enough of a fan service to have Pym be involved in creating the MCU Ultron somehow, and Whedon is as much of a purist as directors come.

"...The big change is that the interesting, visionary filmmaker behind it all will no longer be involved. Good luck to whoever they hire to Brett Ratner this one."

LMAO!! But yeah, it sucks for Edgar since he has championed this movie for so long.

Marvel knew Edgar Wright's vision right from 2006, that's the main reason they chose to do a standalone Ant-Man movie in the first place. And now they got cold feet, as they are choosing to compromise on his vision probably to keep in line with their suits and their safe approach for more mass appeal.

Having a lesser known character/brand isn't the only thing that makes it exceptional and a bold move on Marvel's part, it's also the creative force behind it that has to do the daring choices. Same goes with having James Gunn on board with GOTG.

This Ant-Man movie already had the script, cast and likely production design along with previs, all based on Wright's choices and vision so far. Now somebody is going to take over all that in the last minute, where he personally will have no ground up creative input.

My interest in this movie is virtually nil now. Getting Joe Cornish might be good alternative choice, but considering he and Wright wrote this movie together, I think he won't be interested to take over either.

BTW if anybody didn't get the meaning of the photo above, read below.

Wright's prior three movies were also known as the Cornetto Trilogy. Whedon is holding the Cornetto as a gesture of solidarity for Edgar Wright.

Just re-posting few things from the past.

Edgar Wright on 'Ant-Man' - YouTube
Edgar Wright talks Ant-Man during Comic Con 2006. Little perspective: Hot Fuzz came out the following year in 2007 and Marvel's first self produced film Iron Man came out in 2008.

The audio is not audible in some places, but you can hear most of it. I recommend giving it a listen.

Kevin Feige Confirms ANT-MAN As Official Start to Marvel’s Phase Three, Which Will Include DOCTOR STRANGE | Collider

"Ant-Man is definitely part of Phase Three. Like Iron Man 3, it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie…I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004. He asked me what Marvel was doing with Ant-Man — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an Ant-Man origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before."

If not for Wright, they wouldn't even consider a solo Ant-Man so early on. They might as well scrap this movie and fast track the Doctor Strange movie instead and perhaps jump start the Captain Marvel movie now.

James Gunn:

"Sometimes you have friends in a relationship. You love each of them dearly as individuals and think they're amazing people. When they talk to you about their troubles, you do everything you can to support them, to keep them together, because if you love them both so much doesn't it make sense they should love each other? But little by little you realize, at heart, they aren't meant to be together - not because there's anything wrong with either of them, but they just don't have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way. They don't make each other happy. Although it's sad to see them split, when they do, you're surprisingly relieved, and excited to see where their lives take them next.

It's easy to try to make one party "right" and another party "wrong" when a breakup happens, but it often isn't that simple. Or perhaps it's even more simple than that - not everyone belongs in a relationship together. It doesn't mean they're not wonderful people.

And that's true of both Edgar Wright and Marvel. One of them isn't a person, but I think you get what I mean."

It's easy to paint Marvel/Disney as the bad guy in this. But, maybe Wright just wasn't really as in tune with this as we all want to believe?

I think Scott Pilgrim showed that he is a read for primetime player and I really think his vision for Ant Man would've been spot on... I have a hard time believing he isn't the right guy for this. I also think that Marvel/Disney is probably worried about losing their cash cow - and it will be their meddling that will be their undoing. But, what if there is more to it than just that?

Didn't Kevin Feige once say that Edgar Wright's plans for Ant Man changed the entire way they approached the Marvel cinematic universe? Are we about to get an Alien 3 type of Ant Man movie? I'll watch this one on Netflix.

What I've been hearing is that it's not even Marvel/Disney.. it's just Disney. The boardroom is sticking its fingers in everybody's pies and pissing people off. It's usually a bad sign when your talent starts leaving in droves. Given production times, we've got a couple more years before the effects will become obvious, but we'll see it eventually.

About 3 months ago, Marvel had notes. The meat of the notes were about the core morality of the piece, must include franchise characters. etc., These notes came from the big four at Marvel. Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright did two drafts to try and answer the notes without compromising their vision.

Marvel took the script off them and gave the writing assignment to two very low credit writers. One of the writers were from Marvel's in house writing team. Edgar stayed cool, agreed to stay on the project, and read the draft.
The script came in this week and was completely undone. Poorer, homogenized, and not Edgar's vision. Edgar met with Marvel on Friday to formally exit and the announcement went out directly after.

Edgar & Joe were upset by the sudden, out of nowhere lack of faith in them as filmmakers. Fiege had always batted for them but this felt like it came from the higher ups.

Just to reiterate or maybe I didn't state it properly: I have faith in Edgar Wright's film-making capability. I am most definitely and Wright fan... from as far back as Spaced even.

"You weren't there at the beginning. You don't know how good it was! How important! This is it for you! This jumped-up firework display of a toy advert! People like you make me sick! What's wrong with you?"
