a few websites you guys might wanna check out:
www.frankgambale.com
www.victorwooten.com
Frank gambale is historically known as the inventor of "sweep picking" . He came to spotlight in the late 80's as chick coreas main guitar player
victor wooten is the current Bass hero. master of many techniques. also check out Bill Dickens.
Also, and this ties into Eddie Van halen, because Eddie Vanhalen was EXTREMLY in awe of this guy:
Allan Holdsworth. check out the old holdsworth album called "road games". Eddie got him the WB deal on that record. The thing with holdsworth is his advanced concepts of chord structure, and scales. His music is a hybrid of what is called Rock/Jazz, aka "fusion".
Early Holdsworth is sort of a thinking mans Heavy metal if you will, later he dropped the charvel in lieu of a synthaxe, then later picked up on standard guitar again. Carvin carries his signature guitar these days. In other words, Holdsworth is where Eddie VanHalen really wanted to be, but commericality and fan base demands the "down to earth" type of music. i.e. Jazz fusion doesn't appeal to the masses, just the musicians interested in more challenging music, rythmically(odd meter), and harmonically(complex chord structure) and scale usege( next time you improvise over an E7 +9, try using an Fdim instead of the usual E minor penatonic, it fits the chord but with a different sound, more exotic).
I am from the original home of Gibson guitars: Kalamazoo michigan. I have history with all of this that goes back to the 60's. I grew up a luthier, and there are tons of luthiers in this area still. Abe Wetcher lives minutes away from me. Most all the famous guitar heros came through here at one time or another.
I used to do inlay for Heritage guitars here in Kalamazoo. You can see some guitars I built at:
http://www.dullam-causey.com in the misc folder. Thought some of you might find this interesting.
