Just a quick update.

I finally managed to find some maple wood locally that I will be using to create the neck of the guitar. Also spent my Christmas savings on a table mounted belt sander, and a small band saw. So now I have all the tools I need, just need to set aside some time to actually work on it. :)

I originally intended on using one of the two wired controllers I have for Guitar Heroes, but now I'm thinking I'll actually use one of the new Red Octane brand wireless guitar controllers. We'll have to see how it goes.

Howdy,

Slight OT, But I collect and restore vintage bass guitars.

I plan to build a replica of Michael Anthony's famous Jack Daniel headless bass for my personal collection. It's the very first one that he built, not the second version with Steinberger hardware.

I also plan to build replica of other famous basses like Gene Simmon's Kramer Aluminum Axe Bass, Chris Squire's green Mouradian CS-74, and Spinal Taps's Double neck Tobias "Dollar sign" Bass.

I took some pictures last week of the EVH Frank that the Hard Rock in Orlando has. I'll get them edited later today and posted if anyone would like.

[attachmentid=12060]Here's my Frankenstrat and 5150 replicas.

Its kinda funny really. I started my Franky because I saw the replica in the Hard Rock in Vegas. Always been a VH fan. I got to meet Ed once at the 98 NAMM show.

GORGEOUS repros, man. Really well done. Could almost pass for the real deals.

Ed's gonna start selling Frankie clones through Fender's high end. Expect them to run between ten and twenty thousand, just like Clapton's Blackie clone did. Friggin waste for what they are. Just insane.

DLO,
Dude those are GREAT... And to think they're only 50 miles from me... *plots* mwuhahaha...

Seriously though, those are AWESOME. I'd love to see them sometime.

I actually got to pick Kevin Dugan's brain about the JD bass. I believe he said it was viola tuners(or one of those classical instruments) and piezo electric pickups right under the bridge. You build a repro of THAT bass, me want pictures.

a few websites you guys might wanna check out:

www.frankgambale.com
www.victorwooten.com

Frank gambale is historically known as the inventor of "sweep picking" . He came to spotlight in the late 80's as chick coreas main guitar player
victor wooten is the current Bass hero. master of many techniques. also check out Bill Dickens.

Also, and this ties into Eddie Van halen, because Eddie Vanhalen was EXTREMLY in awe of this guy:
Allan Holdsworth. check out the old holdsworth album called "road games". Eddie got him the WB deal on that record. The thing with holdsworth is his advanced concepts of chord structure, and scales. His music is a hybrid of what is called Rock/Jazz, aka "fusion".
Early Holdsworth is sort of a thinking mans Heavy metal if you will, later he dropped the charvel in lieu of a synthaxe, then later picked up on standard guitar again. Carvin carries his signature guitar these days. In other words, Holdsworth is where Eddie VanHalen really wanted to be, but commericality and fan base demands the "down to earth" type of music. i.e. Jazz fusion doesn't appeal to the masses, just the musicians interested in more challenging music, rythmically(odd meter), and harmonically(complex chord structure) and scale usege( next time you improvise over an E7 +9, try using an Fdim instead of the usual E minor penatonic, it fits the chord but with a different sound, more exotic).

I am from the original home of Gibson guitars: Kalamazoo michigan. I have history with all of this that goes back to the 60's. I grew up a luthier, and there are tons of luthiers in this area still. Abe Wetcher lives minutes away from me. Most all the famous guitar heros came through here at one time or another.
I used to do inlay for Heritage guitars here in Kalamazoo. You can see some guitars I built at:
http://www.dullam-causey.com in the misc folder. Thought some of you might find this interesting.

Ha, cool... I like that Charvel repro. I'll have to give Wayne Charvel a call. I've been friends with his daughter for about 15 years, and she keeps swearing she's going to get her dad to make a guitar for me.

I don't know if Charvel is actually owned by Charvel anymore. I believe Fender acquired them, though I could be wrong.

Those Charvel guitars suck for the money. I've played a few of them, and for the price tag, they can keep them. It's made out of just about the most basic and easily available woods you can find. The maple neck isn't even birdseye or flame. The neck plays okay, but nothing at all to write home about. Those guitars are a far cry from the EBMM and even the Wolfie guitars. For half that price I could see it...maybe.

project update...

Cut out the new neck from maple, but screwed up the top layer because
my new bandsaw wasn't adjusted correctly. Doh.

Here's a couple pics before I killed the top layer...

I used the original Striker neck as a template and then blew up a photo of the correct headstock in photoshop, printed and traced it on the wood.

Now I need to recut the top layer (AFTER I adjust the guides....) and figure out electronics placement.

And after reading about how Eddie actually painted the Frankenstrat, I guess I'll be doing a black base coat, followed by white and red. Having trouble finding a red acrylic lacquer though. :(
