AP Trooper Kit Assembly

I know the "lazy" right eye is screen accurate, but has anyone but me thought about "minimizing" it a bit so it's not so obvious? Or am I the only one who thinks it just sticks out too much?

Great pictures and help, this will be a huge benefit when I tackle my own.

For the trimming are you using the dremel cutting wheel and then sanding with the dremel and file? With gloss ABS how do you minimise the surface scratching beyond the cut line? Every time I see the AP armor I like it more :D

Lookin good, Kev.

I enjoyed my AP as long as I had it... had to get rid of the armor recently. :cry

Here's a little tip in case of Dremel mishap - should you slip and accidentally score the plastic, cut some ABS strips from scrap pieces from the kit and dissolve them in a drop if acetone. When ABS has turned into a white goo, apply on damaged area, let dry, sand & polish. I got a deep scratch on my faceplate (didn't even see it happening), just below the right eye. Saw this tip somewhere, tried it - works like a charm.

I thought about that as it is a bit too pronounced IMO....however, the problem is that you can't trim too much or you have a big gap when you put on the lenses. I suppose you could try heating it up and flattening it out but that could get messy...part of the joy of getting a close to screen accurate set of armor....gotta take the bad with the good....

Kraig....10-4....that's a really great tip for the teeth...thanks.

Shabad...I rough finish with a coarse file to get off the melted crud that the Dremel leaves...then a finer file...and then finish sanding with emery boards. After I finish all of the trimming and finishing sanding, I'll go back and buff out the scratches with Novus plastic polish....to avoid the scratches in the first place?....be really careful. :D ...or I suppose you could put masking tape next to your cut lines to avoid sanding marks....

SL3844...you sold your armor already??? Didn't you just get it?....too bad....BTW...great tip for deep scratch fixes. :thumbsup

BF....more pics coming....once I get going on this, I don't want to stop. I think I'm really primed to finish off the helmet now....then I'll tackle the rest of the armor....

Yep - financial emergency of sorts... it was fun owning an AP kit for a while... :unsure I did keep the helmet though - couldn't part with it.
And you're very welcome re: the scratch fix.

Hi Kev, yes just take the bubble down, but leave a mm or 2 in height. It's probably safer just to flip it around and see if it looks right from the front, if not take some more off.

Both my Gino/CRProps and SDS's are done this way.

Cheers,

Kraig

When making my Sandtrooper AP helmet I used a heat gun to gently heat the area and then just bend it in with my thumb.

I did. I also don't like that eyes kind of sweep up so I "minimized" that. I didn't do anything drastic though. It's all very subtle. "Worts and all" are all still there, I just toned them down a bit to make them look, IMHO, a little cooler.

Anybody have any close up pix of their painted vocoder? It's the one part of the helmet where the ends of the vocoder ridges aren't pulled that sharp.....tried painting it twice but it looked like crap....

ESB would be cool , there are so many ANH troopers out there , and hand armor is easy enough to find ;)

Yea I'm interested to see how this turns out.

Now I have my own selfish question. Kev, what do you intend to use for your chest/back plate shoulder straps? I'm using velcro right now but I'm not happy with it. I've thought about snaps because I'd like it to be non permanent (rivets).

Anyone have any comments?

...I'm still on the fence as to whether I'll make it ANH or ESB...there are alot of ANH troopers out there....I dunno...we'll see how it goes...and yes, I can get a set of ESB hand plates fairly easily...

Altername....yeah, I'm looking at my options...industrial strength velcro would be strong enough, but I want something a bit slicker....rivets/snaps would probably be the way to go. I had bought a quality rivet kit when I put together my Vader chestbox straps so I can make my own snaps. I was also thinking of using an old set of suspender straps in conjunction with the rivets....I'll keep you posted....

Now, I just want to paint this vocoder peoperly.....I have a few reference closeups of the vocoder section, but they do seem to be painted different depending on the helmet. Plus the fact that on the AP helmet it's hard to tell where the outer ridges begin/end....I may just have to wing it very carefully....

Anyone?....Bueller?

Here's my two AP helmets. I used liquid mask. Just take your time, you'll be glad you did. I rushed mine a little and I'm not that happy with it.
