Barton Fink

I fell in love with the movie and its props after I watched it earlier this year and posted my version of the Beach Picture in this thread ==> Barton Fink Beach Picture.

I did a new thread because there are lots of goodies to post and to have all of them under the same name.

My first take was the Hotel Earle logo and the stationery seen while Barton was checking out his room on arrival:
Image1.png

The hotel drawing is an actual logo of the George Washington Hotel located in Washington, PA (link to the official site => History — George Washington Hotel):
Hotel Logo Comp.png

As you can see, the flag and a portion of the streets was removed and the Est. 1909 was added.

For the writing I settled for a total redrawn (except the motto), because I found only fonts that were close, but not enough. I did a LTR and A4 format for the papers, while the envelope is an universal version, which will accept both paper sizes:
Hotel Stationary LTR Sheet.png Hotel Stationary A4 Sheet.png Hotel Stationary Envelope.png

The pages should be printed with the full size and not the fit to page option; the envelope should print at 261 x 233 mm.

And my props:
20230324_185532.jpg 20230324_185535.jpg 20230324_185549.jpg 20230324_185604.jpg 20230324_185617.jpg

Just for fun, I also did an aged version with the pencil shape mark:
20230324_185132.jpg 20230324_185139.jpg Image3.png

The next paper prop is from a deleted scene, where Chet, the hotel clerk, tosses a notice under Barton's hotel room door while he was away:
Image39.png Hotel Memo From Chet.png Hotel Memo Clean.png

The font is not 100% accurate, but will do for now. These should print at 210 x 155 mm.

And my props:
20230324_185652.jpg 20230324_185703.jpg

The next prop was a big headache: the Nebuchadnezzar book by W. P. Mayhew.
Image18.png Image20.png Image22.png Image30.png

The title and name was hand drawn in lack of matching fonts, while for the publishing house name and the text on the back I used the font called Cheltenham. I tried to find the drawing on Google, but with no luck (this might be a job done for the movie?), so I ended up enhancing, then vectorizing the image. The publishing house is a made up name by the Coen Brothers and according to Wikipedia:
Other academic allusions are presented elsewhere, often with extreme subtlety. For example, a brief shot of the title page in a Mayhew novel indicates the publishing house of "Swain and Pappas." This is likely a reference to Marshall Swain and George Pappas, philosophers whose work is concerned with themes explored in the film, including the limitations of knowledge and nature of being.

The name also appeared in another movie wrote by them called Suburbicon:
suburbicon-filming-locations-pappas-and-swain-inc.jpg

The back of the cover was made up using an article from a newspaper thrown at Barton by one of the cops (the photo and the text on the left side):
Image77.png Image79.png

And finally, here's the book's dusk jacket cover, the first page signed and clean and the last page:
Book Cover.png Book 1st Page Clean.png Book 1st Page Signed.png Book Last Page.png

The overall size of the book is 260 x 184 mm with a 75 mm thickness. The dusk jacket cover should print at 647 x 260 mm, while the pages at 250 x 177 mm. Photos of the finished book in post #3 (quick jump here ==> Barton Fink).

The next prop is made of 2 parts:
Image41.png Image44.png

The wrapping looks to be a hotel stationary, while the Thumb Tacks box seems to be a vintage brand. I only found one such box on eBay while searching for images and is a 95% match:
s-l1600 (11).jpg s-l1600 (12).jpg

Except the top and bottom texts, everything else was drawn from scratch:
Thumb Tacks Box Labels.png Thumb Tacks Box Cover Clean.png Thumb Tacks Box Cover with Labels.png Thumb Tacks Box Bottom.png Thumb Tacks Box Wrap.png

The box cover should print at 165 x 130 mm, the center label at 62 x 37 mm, while the wrapping paper at 140 x 180 mm. The box should be printed on thick paper (250-300gr or thick 4), otherwise the top and bottom won't fit. The hotel logo on the wrapping should be on the top label when you do your prop.

And here are my props for the wrapped and the unwrapped boxes:

The next props are two photos of Charlie, Barton's 'friendly' neighbor at the hotel:
Image38.png Image35.png Image50.png

These were corrected, cleaned, the height chart redone with accurate-ish fonts, then enhanced with Topaz Photo AI:
Charlie Photo 1 Final.png Charlie Photo 3 Final.png

The 1st photo should print at 92 x 88 mm, while the 2nd photo at 91 x 110 mm.

And my props:

Another prop can be seen briefly in a couple of scenes:
Image36.png

The typewriter paper top is also an existing prop, but I only found a similar item from the Zellerbach Paper Company in my searches:
s-l1600 (52).jpg

And some from other brands:
s-l1600 (58).jpg s-l1600 (59).jpg s-l1600 (69).jpg

Here's the label with some of the info made up in lack of clearer screenshots:
Lithopaque Paper Label.png

This should print at 210 x 32 mm, but you can adapt its size to your needs.

My last research was of a table seen for a few frame at the beginning of the movie, more exactly on Barton's arrival at Hotel Earle:
Hotel Lobby Magazines 1.png

Believe it or not, I managed to identify all five magazines in just 2 days of search/research:
Hotel Lobby Magazines 2.png

And here are the covers with the perspective corrected and the Hygeia magazine colorized (there's a b/w scan on the Wayback Machine):
Hotel Magazine 1.png Hotel Magazine 2.png Hotel Magazine 3.png Hotel Magazine 4.png Hotel Magazine 5.png

Have fun!

Finally managed to finish the book (the 1st post was updated with the final dimensions and uploads):

I also printed the beach girl photo, but because the frame I bought accepts 400 x 300 mm images, and the photo should print at 360 x 296 mm, I had to stretch the right side of the photo:

Really Nice job RafalFett I have PM'd you :)

Today I made the typewriter paper ream with label using 2 sheets of 20mm thick foam cut to size (A4 in my case), some real paper on the top and all these dressed with an ordinary packaging paper (it has that old/vintage look); finally I added the label:
20230424_193448.jpg 20230424_193456.jpg 20230424_193503.jpg 20230424_193508.jpg 20230424_193551.jpg 20230424_193557.jpg 20230424_193608.jpg 20230424_193615.jpg 20230424_193621.jpg 20230424_193641.jpg

I also did the hotel stationery to look aged by actually printing the aged color on both sides of plain paper, then cutting down the white margins:
20230424_194120.jpg 20230424_194125.jpg 20230424_194128.jpg 20230424_194154.jpg 20230424_194213.jpg 20230424_194217.jpg 20230424_194244.jpg 20230424_194249.jpg 20230424_194253.jpg 20230424_194308.jpg

Here are most of the hotel props in one place:
20230424_194019.jpg 20230424_194027.jpg 20230424_194038.jpg 20230424_193905.jpg 20230424_193910.jpg

You're welcome! Can you elaborate? Are there photos that can be shared (even privately?)
Earl Hays Press made them for the film. I've been hired to archive the prophouse collections. There's several overrun copies of those pieces in the archives

It seems that I have an affinity for hotel paper props, book covers and alcohol labels. In that tone, here's our next prop:
Image88.png

While I found lots of photos (old and new variants) with the Wild Turkey Bourbon Whiskey bottle and label, none of them was an exact match of the one used in the movie, so I had to recreate it. The bottle seems to be around 200 ml and after I bought a couple of bottles, I had a good starting point for my measurements. Most of the fonts I found were close enough and in the end I modified them to match this label (found on eBay):
s-l1600 (94).jpg

Here's a comparison of my label next to the one in the movie:
Wild Turkey Label Comp.png

While the back label is almost invisible in the movie (there's only a glance of its existence), I used a similar label to do my version:
Image90_2.png Wild-Turkey-200ml-1991-II-back.jpg

Also, in some shots you can see the torn tax bottle stamp:
Image89.png Image96.png

I found on eBay a correct tax stamp (early 1940s) and used 3 hi-res photos of the stamp (left, center and right parts) to achieve a good replica.

Here are the labels and the tax stamp:
Wild Turkey Front Label.png Wild Turkey Back Label.png Wild Turkey Neck Label.png Wild Turkey Bottle Tax Stamp.png

The front label should print at 80 x x66 mm, the back label at 56 x 56 mm, the neck label at 100 x 30 mm, while the tax stamp at 150 x 17 mm.

And finally, my replica:
20230501_174454.jpg 20230501_174509.jpg 20230501_174520.jpg 20230501_174526.jpg 20230501_174536.jpg 20230501_174542.jpg 20230501_174544.jpg 20230501_174549.jpg 20230501_174557.jpg 20230501_174604.jpg 20230501_174609.jpg 20230501_174614.jpg

Update for the bottle.
It seems that there's a neck label on the bottle, best seen in this scene:
Image88_2.png

I did my own version of this label (the printable file was added to the previous post):
20230501_194603.jpg 20230501_194608.jpg 20230501_194615.jpg 20230501_194618.jpg 20230501_194623.jpg 20230501_194626.jpg 20230501_194720.jpg 20230501_194723.jpg 20230501_194729.jpg 20230501_194732.jpg

Printed the labels on glossy white vinyl, but also replaced the 1 Quart with 1/2 Pint on the tax stamp (it is closer to 200 ml) and the 1st post was updated with the modified file. Here are some photos of the replaced labels and tax strip:
20230502_201512.jpg 20230502_201517.jpg 20230502_201521.jpg 20230502_201527.jpg 20230502_201532.jpg 20230502_201537.jpg 20230502_201855.jpg 20230502_201859.jpg 20230502_201904.jpg 20230502_201909.jpg 20230502_201912.jpg 20230502_201917.jpg 20230502_201922.jpg 20230502_201927.jpg 20230502_201935.jpg

My ultimate goal is to print the labels on glossy metallic gold vinyl, but I will add them to the other bottle.

As a side note, in the movie the cork with the metallic cap might be a replacement for the bottle cap. I say this, because the tax stamp looks torn much lower than the bottle bore (opening), which might suggest that there was originally a spring cap or a screwcap:

Example of caps:

This prop can be seen for only a few frames and is not important to the story, but I said why not:
Image113.png

Luckily I found some great photos on eBay of a 1/2 Oz box and I managed to fully recreate it:
s-l1600 - 2023-05-06T205226.623.jpg 20230508_195308.jpg

The size is around 50 x 50 x 150 mm, which looks a bit big compared to that scene. After some additional searches, I found on a military related site an ACME first aid kit that had a 1/4 Oz box:
59+29.jpg 20230517_134619.jpg

This one measures 40 x 40 x 100 mm. Much better in size!

Here's the model:
Absorbent Cotton Box Good.png

This should print at 196 x 167 mm.

And as usually, some photos of my replica:
20230517_134558.jpg 20230517_134603.jpg 20230517_134608.jpg 20230517_134612.jpg 20230517_134615.jpg 20230517_134619.jpg 20230517_134632.jpg

And comparison with the bigger box:

Just for fun I printed the magazine front covers seen briefly in the hotel lobby:
Hotel Lobby Magazines 1.png

20230508_200238.jpg 20230508_200030.jpg 20230508_200300.jpg 20230508_200304.jpg 20230508_200307.jpg 20230508_200309.jpg 20230508_200330.jpg

Also, I managed to print the Wild Turkey label on glossy metallic gold vinyl and applied it on the 2nd bottle:
20230508_194558.jpg 20230508_194607.jpg 20230508_194610.jpg 20230508_194615.jpg 20230508_194621.jpg 20230508_194626.jpg 20230508_194630.jpg 20230508_194634.jpg 20230508_194638.jpg 20230508_194649.jpg 20230508_194654.jpg 20230508_194701.jpg 20230508_194704.jpg 20230508_194944.jpg 20230508_194948.jpg 20230508_194951.jpg 20230508_194955.jpg 20230508_194959.jpg 20230508_195002.jpg 20230508_195006.jpg 20230508_195011.jpg 20230508_195015.jpg 20230508_195020.jpg
