Batman 89 Speargun *COMPLETE*

I think the "weed-eater" reel is how I was interpreting the design, which is a neat thought. In the "aiming" scene, it looks like the lines are coming from the side, thus my design. In the "Wrapped around the statue" scenes the line seems to come straight out the back. Two different props. I can't really do both. If the line came out the back I can't insert them in the gun. The compromise is what I'm showing.

That approach makes total sense! When the different prop versions conflict that much you just have to pick one and go with it.

That's awesome. At this point it might just be easier to have my paycheck direct deposited in your account. Looks amazing!!

Yeah, I think we're chalking this up as "Nice try" ... printed out a test on my FDM printer. Does it work? Well, it took a ton of filing, drilling and tweaking to get things to actually fit together. But all the little hinges are just too tiny and fragile. If this was aluminum (like the original) maybe. But even printed in PLA it's too fragile. The walls of the hinges are brittle. And going to the SLA resin will make them more fragile.

When I was originally playing with building the Cathedral Grapple I was thinking about making it out of stacked laser cut acrylic sheet for the arms.

What about a non-working "display only" version? I'm creating an "arsenal" display on a wall in my house with a batsuit and would still love to have this last attachment... even if it didn't deploy. Just a thought.

i think a lasercutted alumium version would be also possible. if you split the pieces in 3x parts and glue it together like a "sandwich"?..
in this way the hinges should be strong. just the seams must be covered.. - just a idea.. :D

True, but the real weak point is the smaller hinges at the center of the body (shown in green).

YUP!

I could never figure out a really great solution for that element. I always assumed the solution would become obvious once I started digging into the final build.

I also think it's likely two props in the film. The "attached" version you see nicely folded on the end of the gun. And the next scene you see an already open version hit the rook of the cathedral. You never see the folded version open up. That is the challenge of the design and I bet the prop guys just made it two different pieces for simplicity.

Instead of doing the middle hinges like that, you could do them like the 3-bladed Batman Forever grapple dart. Much stronger, should still work. It’s similar in the way the blades all fold together. I’ll post pics later.

Yeah, maybe a mechanically idealized pivot would be best for that part. I wish I had time to experiment with this. It's such a fun problem to crack.

That 3 blade grapple is such a clean design solution too.

Yeah, I dod explore that route. And it's definitely more stable, but you cannot achieve the neatly folded look seen on screen. The three arms get in each other's way. That's why I kind suspect a folded prop and an unfolded prop were created.

Maybe it's weird, but after almost a year of planning, design, and production of kits for lots of other people, I'm really excited to finally sit down and build one of these for myself today :)

Awesome! Just started on mine last night - Valor - any tips on how to paint the grapple point to match the brass fixtures, or did you paint them all together?
