Best color for ANH Tie Fighter

Ive tried both painted and clear. The clear unpainted try created a strange glare not seen in any reference photo. the semi gloss seems to look the best.

I think that "see through" area in that workshop picture is a reflection, not something visible on the other side.

I did my middle sheet semi-gloss:

Well, there are a lot of TIE threads in the SS section, so I decided not to start a new one.

Here are some buildup pics of my SS cockpit. Since I could never top JV's "set" cockpit, I decided to go for the look of the filming model. Steve's kit has a nice, accurate insert. But, I wanted to incorporate the upper cockpit detail from the available reference pics. Remember, Steve originally designed his kit without a cored hull. He added that later by request, IIRC.

My goal was simply to kit-bash something that looked reasonable. Not accurate, reasonable. All of these parts are painted with Krylon 1318, All Pupose Primer Gray. I painted them late last night, then noticed that the finish was chalky. Paint, or garage, or both, must have been slightly too cold, or damp (it was raining heavily outside as I was painting). So, I had to strip them down and start over.

In the first pic, starting at the 12 o'clock position, I built a ceiling (practically invisible when installed), a false wall for the hatch (to provide a sense of depth), a window insert (I didn't have to, but it was fun), and added some upper cockpit details inside the hull. I also scratched the triangular doo-hicky that attaches to the upper cockpit frame. I was on a roll. Kits scattered hither and yon around my table and gallery. At one point my 12-year old came in, looked around and said, "You have too much going on in here."

I've got a Harrier on order, should arrive in a couple days. I plan to paint the pilot figure a solid, slightly darker gray (Rustoleum Dark Gray Primer), then check how it looks installed. I have yet to put the cockpit together. Still awaiting the pylon mount, then I need to find a threaded square. Again, this isn't an accurate replica of a filming miniature. Just an approximation that, hopefully, inspires a sense of the originals.

Anyway, on to the pics:

And, what the pilot's view:

Hey, that pitt looks sweet. I think I spy a left over FM Falcon thruster in there.? Anyway, did only the ROTJ TIE's/inceptors sport these extra details or where they featured inside the ESB models too? I could be wrong here but I don't think I've seen it on the ANH/ESB TIE's.

Yours look kick ass, even though it's not the screen accurate parts. Good job.

Steve.

Thanks Steve and Jerry. I'm attending the SW exhibit at Oregon's Museum of Science and Industry this Friday, so I hope to view a real TIE and get some better info on details.

Steve, I do have some pics of ESB TIEs that show a top piece to the cockpit. Interestingly, that particular TIE appears to have had its cockpit insert filed back to permit a front mounting attachment. I don't have access to post the pics, now. But, will dig it out later tonight. Indeed, there are some FM Falcon parts in there. I plan to replace the engine thruster, it was handy for the pics.

The components are just setting inside the hull, not attached yet. I plan to scratch or bash something a little different if I can get a better view of the ship at OMSI this week.

Was wondering about being able to see thru. Is it possible there wasn't anything sandwiched at all? I haven't seen coolshade in person so I don't know if it would stay in place without something between.

Was at the OMSI SW exhibit earlier today. As an experiment, I stood on one side of the TIE and had someone set off their camera flash against the opposite side from a couple different angles. I couldn't detect that any light was transmitted through the Koolshade - of either wing - from the camera flash.

However, I will add that the TIE on exhibit was the so-called "bastardized" version (RoTJ TIE Interceptor? Body and ESB TIE Wings with U-channel around the perimeter).
