Building my first model: TESB LR232 and 223 Despatch Pods

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Time to start working on the 232 hulls.

Used a clip to hold them together before glueing them.

Glued in a piece of styrene to make sure the Plastruct domes don't slide through.

EDIT: I think you're actually better off when you skip this part and leave it open. This way you can use the holes to glue the last 232 hull from inside.

To make sure the angles are correct I used this picture of a pentagon.

Some extra styrene for reinforcement and making sure the angle stays correct

Love your step by step with pictures!

Love your step by step with pictures!

I always thought it'd be nice to see a step-by-step studio scale buildup from scratch, with commentary - something like you'd see in those modeling books they have for sale. With instruction that could be applied to modeling in general as well. The more involved the project, the better.

Great job on this! I am really enjoying following your build.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Nice job. Thanks for sharing. I'd like to make one someday. Good idea to use that pentagon shape to check the angle!

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Got the Plastruct parts this week and some 8Rad's.

Only one more 8Rad to go

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Hi Almar,

Looking good so far. I usually scratch everything, but you inspired me to make my own Despatch Pod in the ways of ILM from a long time ago.

I got evrything but the Lotus. Pretty expensive kit..... I don't suppose anyone could help me out with a resin copy of the Lotus parts needed for the despatch pod?

Great work so far. Update! Update! Update!

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Not a real update, but I got some parts today from El Loco, thanks dude, those casts look great and will do the trick.
Still waiting for my final 8Rad.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Finally the fifth and final 8Rad arrived.

Time to put those Plastruct parts to use, along with some Morser Karl parts. Added the main thruster (JPS rims) and Flak38 parts.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before glueing the Flak38 parts next to the main thruster please read post #50 by Imaginager, who provided some important info.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Looking good!

Just FYI, the Flak38 parts on the bottom next to the engine are actually oriented as in the pics in my thread. Per the reference Jason acquired. Others built them as you have for personal preference. But, the actual filming model is not like that.

The first pic below replicates part orientation using the ref pic from Jason. Note that we can't see the last Flak38 part from this angle. Therefore, in the second pic below I made a "best guess" on its placement. Assuming, of course, it is a Flak38 bit. It's possible there's nothing there, at all.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Okay, thanks for the info. I'll see if I can get it done. That darn glue is very strong.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Here she is all primed up. I know she looks kinda beige but it's grey.

Only thing left is the paintjob. Now I'm not the kind of guy that likes to mix paints to get the most screen accurate color. I'm more a 'straight out of the can' guy. So if anyone can help me out with the color please do. A RAL number or Tamiya color will be great.

Now the pod in this picture looks kinda blue.

But in this picture from 'the making of' it looks more grey.

So, what should I use? I've noticed most of you use the first color.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Almar,
great build up !
Very nice to see your first Studio-Scale-Kitbashed-Model :cool

Yes, it's always very hard to find the right color. It depends on the light, flash or no flash on the Ref.-pics....
I guess it's the same gray/blue, light/dark color story that they have about the Tie Fighter (ANH/ESB)

I say go for a bluish/gray !

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Hey Almar,

Very clean work~!
I just painted mine by Tamiya Haze grey spray.
I'm not sure but the color is similar to the Tie figher's color.

thanks Eric.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Spray painted the model using Tamiya Haze Grey. I made a base out of MDF. Don't know yet what color to give the base so suggestions are welcome. Thinking of gloss black or matt black.
Still have to work on the color around the Plastruct domes and the decals.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Outstanding work through all of this build, but that last coat of primer really brings out the detail.

Re: Building my first model: TESB LR232 Despatch Pod

Nice job!

I like your mounting point. It makes a lot of sense. I'm going to make one of these soon and will do the same.
