check out my iron man helmet!

You can see a real eureka moment here. been planning my helmet for a while and couldn't seem to work the logistics out of having a opening front. You sir, are a genius!

i've got one of these helmets and the quality is great! i keep meaning tp post pics. i just finished with the rub and buff on the face a couple of nights ago.

Cast from smooth-cast roto, 1/4" thick, 2.5 lbs. Rim opening 6 1/2" x 8 1/4" , it's 27 3/4" outside circumference. My head is 6 1/4", 22" round and fits me perfect. The hinged version has friction slide hinges to allow me to slide the face plate up and back manually. I also installed clear safety lenses and an e-l lite strip for the glowing eyes effect. I aslo put on foam pads with felt for comfort. Let me know what you think!:cool

Man! That's a Really nice looking helmet!! Do you plan on making a complete suit?

I've been asked that alot, maybe, but it would take some time and alot of money. I'd love to do it though. I've seen some great suits out there already, have you seen TMP's? It's awesome!:eek Closest to the movie version that I've seen.

The only thing this helmet needs is a car-gloss finish and Oakley gold lenses. The faceplae slide feature is awesome.

Can you tell us more about Smooth-cast roto? Is it very rigid or somewhat flexible?
I'm looking for an alternative for helmet casting, because I'm getting bored of the hand-laying fibercloth.

I've found smooth cast-roto very easy to work with, much better than doing it out of fiberglass. Smooth cast 300 flashes too fast and you might get a clump. With an open mold like mine I can easily chase it around the mold and see where it's flowin. Also several thin layers right after each other will give the best results. Mine has 5 layers , 8 oz. for total weight 40 oz.(2.5lbs)

I've used Smooth-on's "Smooth Cast 300" for slush-casting and it works pretty good. It sets up in about five minutes and has very similar specs to "Smooth-Cast Roto"

So do I. I've been casting helmets with SC300, too, but no matter how much fiberglass I add, it always stays, somewhat, semi-flexible. Plus, the more fiber-cloth and resin you add, the more time you spend casting.

Something to ponder on. Can you squeeze your helmet? is it flexible or totally rigid?

You can't squeeze the one peice, the two part version can be squeezed. But not much.(when i cut it up i guess it loses it's circular rigidity.) SO some flexablity. It's very flexable when thin and still quite durable. I like my parts about 1/4" thick and rigid.
