[COMPLETE] The Amazing Spider-Girl (Female Ben Reilly Custom Dye-Sub Suit)

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

Any updates? I'm super excited to see some progress on this.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

tasm style would look cool in my eyes but if you want to keep it true to the comic the little nozzle is the way to go and as far as price my tasm2 print was 159.60 shipped for a 5'9-6' suit so hope that helps

I picked up some toy ones modeled after TASM2 from Sears.com for cheap. Gonna try and mod them a bit and post pics at somepoint. Might end up going for more of a comic look, but trying to put a real world twist on it :)

Any updates? I'm super excited to see some progress on this.

Currently I am still waiting for samples. FOD told me 7-10 business days before they ship, and that was on February 25th, 2014. It's been 7 business so far and have not heard anything yet. Maybe tomorrow or early next week! I'm really excited to see them myself! ^__^

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

For the web shooters (if you end up going for the comic look), are you looking to do the more flattened cartridges or the cylinders? If going for the cylinders, floral tubes might be worth looking into.

That's an interesting idea! I think I'm going to try out a couple different things to see what I like best.

Just a quick update right now for you guys. I hadn't heard anything back from FabricOnDemand since they confirmed my order on February 25th, 2014, so I contacted them tonight via the on-site live chat feature. They told me that they were a little behind do to some inclement weather and that they will most likely be able to ship out my samples this Monday, March 17, 2014.

Also, since there was a delay that took the order past the 10 business day guarantee for getting it shipped out, they volunteered to expedite the shipping on the samples at no extra cost! This was something that they immediately offered after explaining the situation. Overall it was a very painless and rewarding customer service experience :)

I'll keep y'all posted as things develop!

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

So I was looking for a budget friendly alternative for a face shell to use under the mask, and I saw that some people had modded things like this:

View attachment 279367

The main issue seemed to be that it was too small being as they are for kids, but being as how I seem to have a relatively small head this could work. I also like the idea of using magnets to mount the eyes to the shell for numerous reasons, including greater wash ability without ruining the lenses and the fact that if I don't want to fully take off my mask to see something better, I can just pop off an eye haha

Anyone have experiences good or bad trying to use a this as a face shell?

Hey Ariana! Cool project! I am really looking forward to the final product!
As for faceshells, what you have there is exactly what I have been using for the past two years.
The only mods I made on it were: 1) Remove the rubber molding on the inside - this will give adults more room for our noses! (Not saying you have a big nose or anything!) 2) Cut additional vents in the front under the nose and mouth area. This will help keep you cooler and less condensation build up in the mask. I am usually suited up 1-2 hours at a time and since my first suit doesnt have a removable mask (something I am fixing on my upcoming TASM 2 suit), I also added a small thin sponge at the base of the faceshell to absorb any sweat dripping (So that it doesnt go down the front of my costume!).

I hope that helps and good luck with your project! Lets see some photos! :)

Great tips, Agent Coulson! I'll be sure to implement those into my mask.

I'll post some pics of my current hardware sometime later tonight when I get home :)

I'll take a photo of my faceshell tonight and post it. Nothing fancy, just affordable!

So the first photo shows my faceshell on the left and a new mask on the right. Note the extra large cut out in the mouth area. This really helps with ventilation and also so that people can hear your voice much better and not so muffled.
The second photo on the right is the back side of the masks. Here you can see where I removed the very large rubber section. It would really dig into my face, so by removing it gave me more room and made it much more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time. At the very bottom of the mask in the chin area is where I usually place a strip of rolled up paper towel or a small cut sponge to help absorb sweat and keep it from running down the front of your suit. I also put a strip of paper towel taped to the top as moisture builds up there as well then rolls down.
I hope this helps! :cool

It does! Excellent tips. Thanks so much! :D

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

Okay people, its update time!

First, here is the current hardware I have for building into my suit later. These are the Spider-Girl Frames from TJack with the TASM2 movie style lenses :)

IMG_0785-W.jpg

I traced them on some card stock so that I could mess around with the placement on my really low budget face shell:

I think that there may be a little too much flare out on the tips. I have a small head and these seem to go above where the temples would be, so I may want to shave down the frames a bit to the mark you see on the angled picture on the right. Won't do anything until I've actually cut and sewn the mask area though.

And I also found some toy web-shooters on Sears.com, and they were cheap enough that I thought they'd be worth the buy to play around with. I want paint the brown wrist bands completely silver. Depending on how they come out, I might want to actually make my own :rolleyes

AND................. (*drumroll*) THE SAMPLES FINALLY CAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, my phone camera isn't the greatest in low-light / indoor light settings... So the photos below do not look quite like what I'm actually holding. The reds are less pink / magenta and a bit more orange at the top, which is something that I want to adjust (less highlights in what would be the collar bone area). The blues on the arm aren't quite as visible as I would like them to be, so I will need to add much more highlighting in those areas. I also want to make the hexagon texture larger. Perhaps double the size or more. I do not plan on puff painting this, so I'm not sure what would look too large. Really glad I got the test prints before I made an order for the whole thing!

So what are your thoughts? I am strongly welcoming constructive criticism here from the community as I want to make this look as good as possible :cool

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Female Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

I agree that you probably ought to highlight the blue more and enlarge the hexagons. That was the first thing i noticed on your pattern; how flat it looked. Other than that, this looks spectacular! I've wanted to do a build like this since I was seven and your thread is so inspiring! It's really refreshing to see some female Spideys on here.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Female Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

Love it!! I have no clue on how to make a print but everything I have seen so far looks "AMAZING!" I do agree with you on the Red's needing to be a bit brighter, but on your test prints I still think they look good. I figure it would all depend on how you want your over all suit to look. As long as you stay in the same color type I really don't think you would see a huge diffrence. I am not a big fan of the face shields myself, probably because I have a bucket head and cant find one that fits right....... I like your lenses but for the size of your head I think shrinking them a bit would look much better. As far as the web shooters, I just made some for my Scarlet Spider suit and I am very pleased with the way they came out. I don't know exactly what your looking for in the way you want them to look, but if you like the way mine came out I'll gladly share how I did them if you like.
Good Luck, and once again it's "AMAZING" so far.....

Thank you for the feedback! Trying to come out of the gate strong to represent the female fan base :)

Thanks! Yes, definitely think i'm going to need to shave down the flares on the eye frames about a half inch or so. I may consider getting TJack's smaller TASM2 frames as well. I'll probably end up doing the eyes last though just so I can play around with the completed look. Still up in the air with web shooters as well. Another thing I will need to play around with once I've sewn up most of the suit :)

Update time!

Not really too much to say here. Did some adjustments in Photoshop on the coloration and the hexagon texture size as discussed in my last update post:

Left = Before | Right = After

W-ScreenShot5.png

Made the red a bit darker / richer. I think this should turn out just about perfect :)

W-ScreenShot6.png

Brightened some of the toning areas in the blue after making the hexagon texture larger. With the original sample, the blue highlights got lighter when stretched and looks just a little bit too dark for my liking (unfortunately this is very difficult to photograph). I think the increase in the texture size in conjunction with the actual lightening of the highlights should make those areas look just the way I want them.

I'm going to send out for one more round of samples before I go for the whole suit.

Feedback is very much appreciated!

When I saw that red I literally said out loud "Yesssss..." Haha it was kind of creepy. Anyway, it looks gorgeous! I almost like the old blue more but I haven't seen it in person so I can't really say. The red is A+ though. The texturing looks a lot better. Can't wait to see the end product!

hahaha thanks! In person, the blue looks a little flat until its stretched. The ink seems to blend together a bit more and the highlights are much less defined. Once the fabric starts to stretch this improves a bit, however I figured if I over-exaggerate the blues just a bit in the file, it will come out to be just about how I want it look in person.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Girl [Female Comic Book Custom Dye-Sub Suit]

Submitted my order for round 2 of samples today! Should be here in about 2 weeks... A little bit to wait, but I'd rather be cautious than impatient :$
