Darth Maul Fabric and Patterns??

Does anyone have any suggestions for the outer coat fabric? I have sourced some pretty accurate fabrics for the other pieces, but I am caught between a couple different fabrics for the outer coat. Anyone?

well as far as authentic fabric you'd need to talk to Gino, but I don't think he will tell you anything about it.

Some folks just like to have their secrets.

Ya, he wont help me. His fabrics look good, but I don't know about his outer coat fabric. He sourced his fabric from a production costume so it is probably right, but I have looked at TONS of high def movie stills from the "duel of the fates" part of the film, and it looks nothing like the fabric Gino used (though it is REALLY tough to see). The film used fabric looks exactly like a tightly knit textured cotton (looks like an Egyptian cotton to me). I'll just have to keep looking to see what I come up with. Though I probably wont find the EXACT fabrics, I am confident my reproduction will be just like the movie....they usually are because I'm OCD about accuracy.

Have you tried using the images from the film costume here? In some of the high res shots you can tell that the cloak is a wool, and it really looks like the sashes are the same material used on the pepsi costume...though that still doesn't help on the outer tunic of the combat outfit.

Ya, I have looked at those quite a bit. They are too washed out to really see the fabric texture and/or weave, but they have given some insight into construction. I found and requested some samples of a fabric that I think is perfect for the outer coat. I'll post some pictures of all my fabrics (including the Emperor's robes which extremely accurate to the movie used fabric though pictures can be misleading...) when they arrive.

Regards,
Kody

That's some GREAT detail! Thanks for sharin the pix. More to putwith my Maul collection.

BTW, has Gino released any of the detailed info. on the costume? Last discussion about this costume he had not. Just curious.

edit.......Ooops! Didn't read you already tried to contact him.

The texture of the tabard resembles the fabric used for Obi-Wan. The texture of the robe resembles burlap, just looking at it is making me itch!

The fabric of the outer coat looks like a textured slub cotton/linen. That is what I see when I look high def captures during the duel of the fates sequence. The texture of the fabric is definitely random and not uniform.

The more high res pics I can see, the better chance I have of identifying it. As a costume designer myself, I'm actually pretty handy with fabric identification. What I see in Kaan's pics are what looks like almost like a wool melton or flannel(I think that's the undertunic, which doesn't make sense) The cloak looks like a basket weave of cotton or wool, almost like monk's cloth, but tighter. Can't see enough of the outer coat to tell. It moves like wool. Maybe silk. If it does have the nubby texture, it very well could be a heavy raw silk.

There does appear to be gauze in there as well.

Ya, the under tunic does resemble a wool melton, and that was the first thing that came to my mind. I just don't think that could be right :confused... I have got quite a few samples of raw silks to compare to reference pictures. I'm also looking at various cotton weaves with slubbed textures.

Every time I look between the touring costume and the movie...I feel like they aren't the same costumes. I am going to try to match to the movie as best as I can as I did with the Joker.

To me it looks more like a wool melton. The flannel is a bit more soft IMO.

For this I need to see both, but I think it's monk's cloth, the basket weave (which Leia Boussh wears and I saw at the same Exhibit) looks more heavy than the one Darth Maul wears.

I also looks silk to me, but who knows... :cry

Yeah. That was my thinking. It looks like melton, but it doesn't make sense to put the melton, the heaviest fabric, closest to the skin.

On the pics of the Gino's Maul, the outer coat looks definetly silk. About the under tunic, on the Gino's one it looks more a flannel than a wool.

:thumbsup

Raw silk was one of my first thoughts so I ordered some samples last week. Some of the episode one jedi costumes were raw silk. I'm pretty sure Qui-Gon's was. As far as the the inner tunic goes, I thought it was a wool from the get go, but I was leaning toward a Middle Eastern style wool. Idk....I'll have to see what I come up with!
