Dave Prowse banned from C5 !!

I don't think he'd be receiving statements from Lucasfilm outlining the financial status of the ROTJ production and saying that since there's no profit, there's no payment, if he was on a fixed lump sum salary for his performance in the movie.

I like what Carrie Fisher has to say about the merchandising. She said they all had to sign an agreement to allow their likeness to be used and now, whenever she looks in the mirror she has to pay GL a percentage.

Prowse was not only a bodybuilder but an actor. He was excellent in A Clockwork Orange. And just any of these actors who did a little job and find they are typecast for life, he wants something for his trouble.

David Prowse (I) - Biography

Trained Christopher Reeve for his role in the first Superman (1978) movie.

Diagnosed with prostrate cancer in early 2009. Announced in February 2010 that he had made a full recovery following intensive radio therapy at a London hospital.

Before he entered films, he was a hard working apprentice engineer at BOAC in Bristol. [part man and part machine?]

typecast for life? really? come on. in order to be typecast... people have to know who you are. to be typecast, the average person off the street would have to look at you and instantly recognize you for that role. no way in the world is he typecast.

I'm tired of hearing Prowse whine about getting his voice replaced. It's been 30+ years, get over it. You don't see Jeremy Bulloch complaining, do you? How about Garrick Hagon? Ever seen him cry in his beer about his role getting cut to almost nothing?

Also, an interesting contrast with Bob Anderson who hasn't sought to capitalize on his own important contribution.

Interesting, I just googled Mr. Hagon and found his Biggs website, which just seems full of love for SW and the fans, very uplifting.

im not surprised. but really, it doesnt take a letter from lucas film to say "hey, dave, you're a jerk. we dont want you coming to our functions anymore." that just gives him more to ***** about. ive also heard prowse's a difficult person to deal with anyway. him not appearing wont affect the attendance. they'll still show up and still shill out money.

this is wrong. at first i was like "wrong! they had to!" but then i remembered this is george lucas we're talking about. usually extras are included in credits, and i dont recall seeing any of them. would they be in stunts? thats anotehr place where troop types are thrown. so, my "this is wrong" is more on the moral side.

and even if they were, for them to claim residuals would be stupid. "here hold this gun" is different from "alright harrison, just say what i wanted you to say. and dont say "i know" this time."

Extras being listed in the credits? What movies are you watching. That very rarely EVER happens if at all.

I don't think it's the same. Half the time you can substitute most voices with other voices. What made Vader real to me was not really his voice. It was his stance, his walk, his death grip, his mechanical breathing and just the way he carried himself. Vader didn't need to say anything to know he was a Badarse. Just look at the begining of ANH. As soon as he walked through the doors you are like holy **** this guys going to kill someone. Just like many different people could have worn the suit i think there are plenty of voices that would have worked for Vader.

Totally agreed. Not to take anything away from JEJ, his voice was the icing on the cake...Prowse's presence, his walk/gait, the way that he stood and carried himself...THAT is what made Vader impressive. Seeing Hayden in the suit in ROTS, just didn't have the same impact...JEJ's voice was there, but Hayden just couldn't pull it off.....wouldn't have mattered if they took the ANH suit and padded it for him, it just wasn't Vader.

If I were Dave, I'd be pissed too.

I remember meeting Dave in Forbidden Planet in London - back in 1980.
Mark Hamill turned up later on too - but that's a different story.
Dave sat at a table, signing anything anyone put in front of him: 'Dave Prowse is Darth Vader.' I guess back then, he wanted to be known as the guy that brought the physical presence of Vader on screen to life. Remember that Tantive entrance - that look up at the Falcon in the Death Star hanger bay, before walking away - the creep up to admiral whateverhisnameis and then reaching out to choke him?
Oh, and don't forget he actually learnt the lines and spoke them on set.
Anyway - when I met him he said to me, 'Have you seen the film yet?'
'No,' I replied, (this was around a week before it was shown, IIRC) 'not yet.'
'Well you're going to love it, I saw it last night and it's incredible.'

I find it sad how things have changed - neither Dave or George are getting any younger.
I've seen Dave a couple of time since that first encounter - and he still signs 'Dave Prowse is Darth Vader.' I think he's right.

yes, but Bob is still working
didn't he choreograph the fights for LOTR

Sure, but he's remained comparatively mouse-like about his involvement with Vader, and besides stunt scenes, what other screen-time as Vader did he have that might more often be presumed to be Prowse?

I can't really agree with you fellas here. In my opinion Prowse is at the back of the queue. First off Vaders iconic presence comes from his look, courtesy of those involved in the design and execution of the costume. Then it's JEJ's voice which is rather inspired voice casting and fleshes out the character much more than Prowse's "acting" abilities ever could.

Prowse's contribution boils down to standing, moving head slightly and a little bit of pointing. The fact that Bob Anderson can slip in as Vader unnoticed by fans shows that it's the suit, not necessarily the man.

Hayden as Vader was just a bad choice by Lucas, being so far removed from Vaders established size and frame that no amount of padding will prevent it looking off.

I'm not meaning to be churlish to Prowse, I'll just always have an appreciation for his Green Cross Code man long before what he added in depth to Vader.

Great post! :thumbsup

Did he get a raw deal years ago? Hell yes! That said, you cannot go around bad mouthing the guy that made your name known in the sci-fi world and then expect to be invited to the party.

Thanks westies.

Oh - I forgot to mention. Dave didn't charge for his autograph back in the 80s.

Qui - I agree with you to a degree. But it seems recent conventions (there's an Empire reunion one in London this weekend) are attended by Admiral what'shisface and General couldncareless, charging $30 for a signed piccy. It seems these guys have nothing bad to say about their time during these films - but Dave just expresses himself openly and honestly and that's what gets him into trouble.
It's a shame - but from the threads I've seen posted here of late, Lucasfilm doesn't need to worry about Dave giving them bad press, their legal department are doing a fine job all by themselves.

Howard, it is called "Don't poke the bear". The bit actors seems to have this firmly in their head..."Don't **** off Lucas"...but Prowse cannot wrap his head around this simple fact.

Its as simple as biting the hand that feeds. He couldn't possibly expect to get away with it for so long and LFL do nothing about it.

In the end its sad really because as a Star Wars fan, I'd love for Prowse to be there but you can't really blame LFL either.
