Favorite NES game?

Favorite? There are far too many classics on the NES. Probably more here than any other system. So, I'll try to list some that haven't been mentioned. But I'll re-mention some just because...

Bionic Commando - They shouldn't have messed with the original arm in the remake. The original was perfect.

Life Force - Still one of the best shooters. Only behind Axelay on SNES.

Faxanadu - Awesome music and adventure.

Metroid - Try to beat it without the using maps. New games are all too easy.

Rescue Rangers
Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2
Castlevania, Simon's Curse, Castlevania III
Mega Man 2
Goonies 2

There are a bunch more. I'll Probably add more later.

Super Mario Bros, I played that game so much that when I would go to bed I could still seethe image when I closed my eyes...lol.

Metroid was another favorite of mine!

"Snake rattle and role" was a load of fun and I never beat it, but the game play of "Shadow of the Ninja" was so sharp and refined even for today's standards that I have to recommend it to everyone that is thinking about revisiting the 8-bit games.

Shadow of the ninja was good. The Uninvited was an interesting game too. New games do seem way too easy don't they?

I managed to beat snake rattle and roll a couple of times. That last couple levels were VERY difficult. The key was trying to make sure to get as many possible "extra lives" throughout the game whenever you could.

As for the "ScrewAttack Video Game, Top 10: Hardest NES Games" list:

Ghosts and Goblins is really tough so that was a good choice
I'm also surprised that Ninja Gaiden is #7.
I also seriously can't believe that Blaster Master isn't on that list.
Battletoads isn't really that difficult...odd choice.
No Bart Simpson vs. Space Mutants? I thought that game was super difficult. Heck, I probably died thousands of times on the first level of that thing.
I also always thought IronSword was really difficult too. Maybe it was just me :lol

Yeah I downloaded some generic joystick mapping software a while ago to map those buttons to a controller. I still need to make a NES USB controller someday.

You have to use the arrow keys to move (right hand) and Z and X (left hand)

That is backwards. :( Any way to use a controller?

Ive still never beat Bionic Commando. I cant get past level 6? the one right before the really long path going up and to the right on the map

Well, as a game industry veteran (22 years now....I got my start at Activision as a game tester and a game reviewer for Gamepro...before moving on to Atari, Sega and Sony), I've played a ton of games. I have to say that some of my favorite games were on the NES. I loved many of the ones mentioned here including Contra, Ninja Gaiden (even though it had nothing to do with the arcade game), Bionic Commando....but one of my favorites was one that we made, Die Hard.

It was one of the first games to have a simulated random enemy, health and weapons placement, so items were in different places every time you played it. It also was the first to use line of sight (albeit in a primative top down view) and sound (you could hear footsteps in the next room). It was a lot of fun. I even got to write the game manual. The industry has changed so much. There are days when I definitely miss those simpler times. BBQs, laser tag at night in the building, not nearly as much corporate crap and politics to deal with. Sigh...

I'll be honest, I REALLY didn't like Die Hard (my biggest problem was the shooting mechanics and the line of sight thing caused me issues, perhaps I was just bad at the game) but I do give it credit for being true to the film and being innovative with the limited resources available to the NES. That's much more than I can say for most other film based NES games!

You had one of my many dream jobs. :)

Total recall had to be one of the worst NES games lol. My friends got the NES when it first came out so i cut my teeth on megaman and games like Ikari Warriors and Jackal. I didn't discover Zelda and RPGs until the SNES.

First off, I hate you for getting to have those jobs! :angry I wanted to do that SOOO bad as a kid! (just kidding about the hate part but I am jealous! Laser tag parties in the office? YES!!!)

Second off I failed to mention that my love for Ninja Gaiden wasn't just the NES version. I have beaten EVERY version of it other than the game boy DS version that came out. That includes the arcade, all 3 NES titles, Xbox, Xbox 360 and even the Sigma versions on PS3! Can you say Gaiden CRACK HEAD? :lol (where the hell is part 3???)
