I too never heard of this until recently. It turns out that Disney ordered them to be completely wiped out.
A conspiracy theory might have arisen from this story, however, History Detectives, a television program on PBS, conducted an extensive investigation on the topic. The historians and researchers of the PBS program conducted a nation wide search finding that there are no records nor evidence of any legal action between the two parties. Inquires to Disney historians and archivists, resulted in a letter stating that no such action had ever existed between the companies. Hence the legend is dismissed as local gossip made urban myth.
Who says they even knew about the student film? People have only started trying to make A Thing about it very recently...After learning of the student film, why not change their script a little?
Because they knew the students didn't own copyrights on a student film, and that there was legally nothing that could be done.
Where did you get this information?? Please post any pics of this toy. I've never heard of it before and I think this is not based on facts.
It was originally called Mortimer Mouse but his wife liked Mickey better.

Up is not about a flying house.
The reason he decides to do what he does, and ultimately let go of that pursuit, are where the genius lies.
It's interesting to read the "official" Disney-only family account of the mouse's origins and the more plausible Ub Iwerks origin story. :unsure
LOVE that book. I collect Flip the Frog stuff and Ub is one of my heroes. The book goes into more detail about the origin of Mickey Mouse than the documentary. But both do discuss that Ub is, indeed, the one who designed Mickey, NOT Walt and that Walt's wife came up with the name Mickey. Neither the book nor the docu mention the supposed "Micky" toy.A good read is the book "The Hand Behind the Mouse" written by Leslie Iwerks and John Kenworthy. It was also release on the DVD "The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" put out by Disney.
Ub was a genius!! :thumbsup

Anyone hear about this? Apparently this 5 minute French student film was made in 2005, and Up was released in '08.
The similarities are stunning:
