Kewl. I was hoping that the sloppy writing, plot holes from hell and randomly dropped subplots would leave that big draw item untouched by the Great Facepalm In The Sky.

C'mon...you know that answer will lead to a zillion more questions after all the bitching about it dies down.
Not for me. My issue with it is I have NEVER wanted to know the answer to it. I've never even asked myself it. Keeping it a mystery allows the Doctor to be anyone, have any motive.
Characters like that are special because they capture the imagination of an audience and each viewer adds to their own version of the story.
Too much dwelling on backstory and not enough forging new adventures IMO.

Just like in Star Trek TNG when Guinan was introduced. She was cool and mysterious. As soon as they named her species El'Aurian or something like that, she was just another alien and not as cool somehow.

So telling you that the Doctor's human half was actually me and the whole "on his mother's side" stuff was a lie would be right out then?

What I think RTD did especially well with the character during his run, was to peek into the Doctor's darker side. Here is a man that has been through a lot. He had to make a choice to destrot his own people to save the universe. Not an easy decision to make, and leaded with ramifications!
His dealing with that would mess with his head. It would change him. The days of happily tromping the universe in an old blue box with a floppy hat and long scarf are behind him.
His actions would bring out the dark side of him, and if left unattended by companions, he could swing to that dark place.
It does not change who he is, a caring man who wants to help people, he is just being chased by those decisions he was forced into.

Something i've wondered is why do TL's hide their names? 'The doctor', 'the master', etc. Why do they need codenames? Why can't they be bob and fred?
With the rest of the TL's gone, I don't see a point in hiding who he is or his name etc, unless they plan on pulling a Rumplestiltskin kind of thing and making whoever knows his name be able to control him type thing.
3.5 weeks until we start getting new eps...then we can focus on those

There are only a few who do IIRC. And as for why they still do if you used a name for 1,000 years it would stick to you as well.
That's how they're known so why not run with it?

Well, The Doctor chose that name because of what and who he is, someone who wants to help others.
Having used it for so long, it has become his identifier.
And if (Sorry Mike) River Song is right, we humans got the word Doctor from him. So somehow, he chose the name based on his desire to help, then after all his travels, the name was derived from all of his help.

I still don't like the new Cybermen. The appearance I could live with, but they totally changed their origin. And glitter guns probably won't work on them. And I was so excited when the Doctor and Rose found the old-school helmet in the rich guys museum.
