GREEN HORNET "Sting" Gas Gun: A Build Log

Multitasking...

Making up for a lifetime of lost time, not having started this hobby until my late 40s! While something's drying or curing, something else can be sanded!

Got a whole lotta sanding done!

And yes, that's a lot of extra parts. I printed up a lot of extras, so I can be stress-free in making lots of mistakes. You go to school on the first one; failure is REQUIRED for skill building. I plan to finish all the extras all the way; in my experience, attrition takes one or two every step or so. Any leftovers will go to Mr. cjunco1937!
It’ll be cosplayed so any leftovers will come in handy in sure!

After sanding and washing all the parts, I applied all the magnets.

4mm x 3mm magnets were CA glued into both ends of the canisters:

4mm x 1.5mm magnets were CA glued onto the ends of the mini hoses:

As before, pole alignment consistency is critical here!

Underlayer of Alclad II black gloss primer, followed a day later by Alclad II Polished aluminum:

The canisters will get a protective coat of Alclad Aqua Gloss, followed by a masking of the tips and some random liquid latex chipping, before moving on to the green.

For the green I did some testing, including painting directly on a real green canister, and here's the winner, to be applied by airbrush:

It goes on matte, so there will be a final coat of Rustoleum 2X Painter's Touch Satin Clearcoat.

Canister caps given the brass treatment (5:1 Alclad Candy Golden Yellow & Candy Red, over Alclad II Polished Aluminum, over Alclad II Gloss Primer).

Mini hoses were given a coat of Rustoleum 2X Painters Touch in Satin black.

They're done!

The canisters have been clear-coated with the Aqua Gloss, liquid latex masking has been applied in small spots, and the tips are masked off.

The masking of the tips is intentionally "by eye" without measurements, and therefore potentially inconsistent. I found that to be the case with the real canisters:

Ready for green!

Yep, that makes sense about eyeballing the masking. Vintage is a good thing.

SETBACKS!

It can't always be sunshine and rainbows...

First, I painted a bunch of "brass" parts before realizing that my latest gold candy mix had too much red in it. Looks almost copper instead of bright brass (which stands in for matching the yellow of the costume)!

And second, this is the big one. My satin clearcoat reacted with the water-based Aqua Gloss underneath the great paint, turning it black. Should have tested first! So now I have to re-do a bunch and take a different painting approach.

Time to take a break from this project for a few days and get my bearings!

Vader voice: “NOOOOOOOOOO!!!”

Sorry to hear dude. Well if it makes u feel better, you nailed the green based on that pic (don’t see any black).

Obviously pics alter the colors but, if it helps, here is the painted mask showing the gold…

Yeah, that's the gold I was going for. My phone brightened it a bit, so it's darker in person...too dark. S'ok, I'll figure it out.

Ports installed in the canisters:

I can see a change I need to make. The ports will need two magnets each (to make them shallower), and the small hoses will need to be trimmed up a bit. Easy to do. :)

All right, big update today!

I re-did the mini-hoses, ports, and magnet configuration. This is far more stable and the hoses easily pop on and off!

Secondly, I finished V1 iterations of the rest of the parts:

I will have to print them and test fit before I'm convinced they're final; I'm sure there will be plenty of adjustments to be made.

And finally, I did a finish test. cjunco1937 is considering switching from gun-metal finish to copper for the rail and brackets, so here is the magazine bracket completed in multiple finishes:

PXL_20240917_211249727.jpg PXL_20240917_211301777.jpg
  1. The first bracket is painted in gunmetal, touched up with some graphite powder, and lightly weathered with an acrylic black wash.

  2. The second bracket is painted in copper and given a very light acrylic black wash.

  3. The third bracket is painted in copper, given a real green patina, and a heavy acrylic black wash.
More progress will happen as soon as I get my 3D printer back on its feet, hopefully in the next few days!

Canisters and hoses look fantastic. Number 1 (gun metal) looks great and is the safe bet. It will look terrific regardless. But I love number 3 (copper/green/heavy weathering)! Have to see it on the gun obviously but I think if we go copper, that’s the way to do it. Awesome job Bill.
