Immortan Joe Progress Log - 3d Models, W.I.P. photos, and Con Results!

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

In some of my other downtime the last few days I have been working on Joe's war club. I started with a styrofoam block that I shaped on my belt sander into what I thought was about the right shape.

I did some bondo work over the foam and attached it to PVC pipe...

I sharpened a little wooden point for the pipe since I figured I'd want it to be made of something a bit more durable in case it gets knocked on things. Once everything was together...

... I decided that it was the wrong shape and started all over again. :wacko Just a bit too big, honestly, so back on the belt sander it went, and it'll get a few more coats once I thin the profile of the thing down a bit.

I have never wished more for a lathe! This would be so easy to crank out from a block of wood. Ah well.

Stellar, stellar work, my friend. Thank you for your painstaking documentation. My rebuild will be so much better for it!

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

I have been woefully short on time the last few days thanks to work, especially in light of the fact that the convention submission date for the NYCC Eastern Championship is in about a week. To save myself a bit of time and energy, I set my 3d printer to work on the staff while I was otherwise indisposed.

Is it a waste of 3d printing tech? Probably. But it saved me a bit of time. I printed these things in Simplify3d's 'vase mode', which made them very thin single-walled layers that printed out fairly quickly. They are sized to fit on the PVC piping I had without too much fighting; once they got slid onto the pipe, I covered them in epoxy and resin to reinforce and harden them substantially, and now I have a fairly workable prop on my hands.

Does the job well enough! I struggled with figuring out exactly what color it is supposed to be, but I found a brown enamel that looks pretty close that I'm going to go with. I also ended up finding this lovely image of Hugh himself sitting with the club:

I do wish I had seen this image before, as it's a pretty clear look at some of the decorations on the staff. It's also more egg-shaped than I think I've made mine, but at this point I don't have the time to fuss with it. I'll bodge together my own collection of trinkets onto it.

I'll add the files for the staff bits to the OP. I don't think they're perfect, but they're serviceable and they get the job done, so if it helps someone else, so much the better.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

While everything else is going on, and because I am ADD as all hell, I am prototyping something else to go with this whole outfit...

Joe's chrome spray bottle that he uses to anoint Nux.

Now, I haven't got a clue as to what exactly this is supposed to be, but I do know that it'd be a million times more fun if it actually worked. That's why I went out and got a couple of these from my local crafts store.

These are dirt cheap, safe for consumption, silver in color, and fairly compact in size. Just about perfect for when and if a lunatic like me meets a likeminded individual who wants to ride to Valhalla. Even better, the label peels off really easily, which leaves me with an inoffensive, plain-looking spray can. The Amazon reviews for these things even include multiple references to people using them for Warboy cosplays.

I made a reasonable 3d mock-up of the color mist spray after taking some measurements with my calipers and went to town designing the enclosure.

The spray should slot fairly snugly into the bottom, and the 'cap' should snug right over the spray nozzle of the canister and move as a single, unified piece. The V8 emblem on the top is just me having a little fun, while also marking which way the spray should end up going when the top is depressed.

I've got a prototype printing right now, and it looks like the base is going to take about 20 hours to come out with all the necessary supports. Should be interesting - and obviously, if it works, I will put the files up for consumption.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

Straight off the bed! And with a bit of hasty cleanup...

I've got the top printing now - once everything is confirmed to fit together cleanly, I'll upload the files. :)

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

In the mean time...

Airbag top section is basically done, although we did mess with the levels of stuffing a bit to deflate it some after these photos.

Bottom section should hopefully be much simpler!

Also finished decorating most of the war club. It's far from perfect, and definitely not screen accurate, but it gets the job done well enough for now.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

We're in the home stretch, so things are happening much faster now. :)

Frame has been all painted up and the mounting brackets attached. Airbag has been pretty much entirely hand-sewn over a foam form to try and give it the approximate shape required. In hindsight, latex is probably the better way to do the airbag, but all things considered I think it's looking pretty good.

With everything mounted up together:

Going to cut and trim two holes in the side of the airbag for the L-shaped hose attachment to go through, and then it should be a simple matter of getting all the hoses and fans hooked up inside the airbag. The battery for the fans (and probably the fans themselves) will be mounted on the Y-frame, hopefully tomorrow, and I should have room for the voice amplifier as well.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

Man, this is such a spectacular build! I can't believe that you've created a bellows that's not only screen accurate, but incorporates actual practical functionality too. Inspiring stuff!

Everything is pretty much mounted up! And it's a bit easier to show in video, so...

I will be elaborating a bit on the electronics in the bag once I sit down and code an arduino to control the fans with a bit more finesse. In the mean time, at least everything is cosmetically done and functional, with the exception of some necessary weathering on the airbag, armor, and fabrics.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - WIP with 3d Models and now working air filtration!

The airbag is pretty much done at this point. We did a bit of weathering and distressing with acrylics, and the whole thing is pretty well self-contained. Only change I think I might make in the next month is going to be trying to quiet or soundproof the fans a bit more than they already are.

I'm also happy enough with the files for the spray bottle at this point, so I'm adding them to the OP. I've got mine base coated and am just playing around with some rough weathering ideas:

I'm trying not to be too precious about the thing since it'll probably be hanging from a loop on my belt the whole day and get banged up anyway. It does work pretty much exactly as designed, and lets me spray things... though I will say that the Wilton spray is actually really gross tasting. Won't kill you, but very bitter.

Lastly, we spent some time doing some styling to the wig, including trimming it to shoulder-length, adding a bit of curve to the weft of the hair, and also plucking the widow's peak a bit farther back.

Will probably pluck the widow's peak a bit farther back, and I'm looking at getting a silicone spray to maybe make the hair tangle less. We'll see how it goes!

Holy crap this is definitely the best Joe I've seen! The whole build is amazing, but your belt, wig, war club, and the bellows truly set it apart... fantastic work!

Ein,
What makeup are you using? My eyes are all stuff I dropped a pretty penny at Ulta for, but I have not found a white that I'm happy with the evenness and longevity.

This is the part where dating a woman who is big on makeup comes in handy. :) She bought some stuff especially for this, a Ben Nye color wheel with red, white, and black on the palette. This is the one. Applied with a latex sponge for the face and makeup brushes for the eyes, but we found that fingers honestly worked better for spreading the white on, at least on my comparatively dry man-face. The heat from your hands helps blend and smooth the white. She also used a translucent powder ("Ben Nye colorless loose powder") and a Nyx matte setting spray, to keep it from rubbing off on the inside of the mask, and a bit of black eye shadow over the black on my eyes to set it... but in truth, you could do 90% of it with just the color wheel I linked.

We had been talking about if I should try and get fake eyebrows or something, since mine aren't suitably bushy, but just spreading the black up in those directions seems to be sufficient for getting me looking about right.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - Pretty much done! 3d Models and WIP photos.

Yeah after hours of starring at photos of his face the black sorta absorbs the eyebrows as you move outward anyway.
I'd skip the fake ones.
I'm using a smashbox primer, NYX black eyeliner pen, NYX reddish eyeshadow, I've tried grease and creme face paints. Setting it all with an Urban Decay makeup setting spray, maybe counter productive on the white paint.
Immediately it looks great, quickly the white runs/fades. The red seems to suck in the black as time goes by. Even when I use to be superfit I sweat like none other so there's that too.

Thanks for the info
I'll grab some of those color wheels and give it a go.
Ein you look badass all done up!

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - Pretty much done! 3d Models and WIP photos.

Looks great, Ein! All that hard work has paid off but, seeing you've gone this far; why not go further? You could use an extra 50 pounds on you to really fill it out.:lol

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - Pretty much done! 3d Models and WIP photos.

Magnificent. I've really enjoyed following your build. Your Joe is excellent.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - Pretty much done! 3d Models and WIP photos.

Same here...I've truly enjoyed following this build. Your work, talent, and attention to detail are phenomenal! Amazing work! To both of you :thumbsup

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - Pretty much done! 3d Models and WIP photos.

Suit came out amazing, really fantastic. Thank you for sharing your work and your 3D files it is making my build so much easier.

Re: Immortan Joe Progress Log - Pretty much done! 3d Models and WIP photos.

I spent a bit of time hooking an arduino up to do fan control and now I've got a couple airflow modes installed, including a few where the fans ramp up and cycle down power to 'breathe'.
