JAWS: Quint from the ground up (Shoes, Pants, Shirt, Jacket, Hat)

Update on this off the shelf hat. I definitely think this hat is the closest thing I have seen in a decent price range but would need to be dyed and mucked about. They only come in this faded red and need to be washed thoroughly to remove whatever weatherproofing is in the cloth.

Big caution when you order: the size descriptions L XL are correct but the inches are not. I measure 23 inches and am a Large in US hat sizes but this hat advertised at 22.5 and called it an XL. It arrived as an XL and measures about 23.5, a true XL even in US sizes. I would have purchased the Large and had a fit far closer to Quint. His hat is too small for him and you see how tight it is. I have attempted to shrink mine up and it does look better but could do for maybe a boil for 20 minutes to shrink more. The brim is a standard which is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer than quint's but unless you were right next to the original, no one could tell. I suggest ordering by the description Large, Extra Large etcetera based on where you fall in that range in US sizes and ignore the inches that are posted on this website. I will work on dye and post again. Here is one side by side and one front view:

If any other tweak was needed, I think it would be folding down some of the arc on the front pockets. But again, if this takes the gray black dye, this is a great, near screen accurate, off the shelf puchase. Several of the other "Quint" customs offered on Etsy and similar, have the adjustable strap and hole in the back. This one is very nearly the exact same hat used and needs only coloring and weathering. Exact match would include shortening the brim and the pocket.

Thanks again to backstagejack1 for posting the link to this beautiful cap.
That's a nice looking hat! Glad it's worked out, I can't wait to see how it turns out.

OK! I've had the correct Quint jacket for maybe 10 years or more but never really put it together with the rest of the outfit. Seeing the recent updates in this thread was nice inspo. So over the last few weeks I've finally put together the Quint base outfit.

Here is what I've got:
  • M1951 Field Jacket
  • 70's Levis Orange Chambray Shirt
  • Black Work Jeans
    • I went with Levis 501 '93 jeans here. These have a bit higher rise and looser thigh than the the standard 501s and fit the 70s aesthetic a bit more than other modern stuff. And I love the button fly and fit on me so they're gonna be daily wearers too.
  • Canvas Sperry Deck Shoes
    • I got the new Striper II CVO Sperrys also for daily wear. These aren't exactly like the originals but the extra padding and structure around the ankles makes them much more comfortable.
  • Black 1.75" Garrison Belt (brass buckle)
    • After watching the film this last time I'm pretty sure the buckle is brass. I had this style buckle sitting around so I made the proper black belt to go with it. Apparently Quint shops at the same store as Robert Muldoon from Jurassic Park as they both have the same belt though Muldoon's is brown.
  • Heather Gray Socks
    • Small but important detail, though in some scenes he goes sockless.
  • Blue Bandana
    • If Quint's not wearing his hat he's usually got this bandana wrapped around his head.
  • 5-Panel Hat (Not Yet Here)
    • I've got his on order and I think it's the last piece to complete the ensemble.
I still need to make the name tag for the jacket, shorten the sleeves and maybe do a couple other mods. But other than some breaking in and weathering I thinks that's about it.

woot! That is a crazy strong build already.

Hat updates are going in my build thread until I complete it so I don't blow up this thread. I bought a smaller size as well and am convinced that the sizing, while incorrect on inches, is correct on sizes if you are calling the large "a large in US men's hat sizing". Throw out the inch measurement given on the site. Here is round one of coloring which shows the threads will need an added touch with colored inks:

What color are the the screen worn pants and shoes? Thanks in advance, gents.
Shoes are two actually. In one scene they present as a dirty and very gray tan. In most others they present as a medium to dark gray and not tan at all, not even a hint of tan. My assumption is they are much darker when wet. the important part is to not jump to tan because you see some tan in one picture. you could start with tan but then gray them out because even when dry they look like tan that has been dyed gray.

the pants always present as dark gray and black when wet. The color of old black denim jeans.

The pictures above are of decent quality and can be zoomed.

Hey all, looks like everyone's builds are going great. I was gonna mention a quint "variant" look. Though no where near iconic as him in the M-51..... according to "The Jaws Obsession" podcast, Quint is wearing a Navy CPO shirt in the chalkboard scratching scene. I loved this idea and the podcast is probably right as it makes perfect sense.

There's plenty to choose from on eBay, etc with varying prices. Here's mine that I just acquired. The collar needs a little training to lay down more but I think it'll work. Mine's made from melton wool and has the proper naval buttons. I think it'll do the job for a "sleeper" Quint look plus it'll be great in the winter.

This would be wonderful. I badly want to stage the chalkboard scene.

Definitely a CPO. I don't know how old you are, but CPOs were quite popular in the 1950s, 60's, and 70's. My brother and I grew up wearing those things. Everyone had them and a denim jacket. Great for the fall.

OK, I am calling this my final pose. I have plenty of pics to play with but here is my side by side comp pictures. Thank you BossThreads for this thread, it made this build sooooo much easier.

I'll keep messing with the pictures I have and fill out my last few points on my steps to completion in my build thread but I am totally stoked with this fun pose at my little local store. Calling this build complete.

Uncanny how much you resemble Quint... absolutely amazing job.

So as Halloween bears down on us, I've been ramping up my Quint stuff. Shoes, name tape and belt are all on the way. Just like the CPO jacket, I've just been kinda deep diving and was wondering if anyone had any clue on the boots he's wearing in the Quint shack scene? It's pretty difficult to tell as they're barely in the scene and there's zero good shots. They seem pretty substantial though.
Obviously he wears the Sperry's on the boat, so off the boat I've tried to rack my brain what Quint would wear.... he usually always wears something military related or nautical but clunky boots, I just don't know........they seems to have a substantial heel and I almost want to lean towards loggers boots? Just wanted to see if anyone had a great guess.

on a side note, I just finished reading "The Jaws Log" and I loved the part where Quints Shack took so many permits and deals to get built and part of that was to tear it down as soon as filming was done..... and then the locals loved it so much that they asked if it could stay up. Sadly, it could not......

my hat, my hat, my kingdom for my hat!
Sigh, so I recently made a massive move across the USA, basically from Texas to New England and my Quint hat is.......somewhere. Went to look for it in the storage unit today and so far, no luck. I may have to postpone my Quint look till next year sadly. I guess I could do it with the bandanna but just not the same......
It's not great but gives me more time. My M-51 is a replica and needs some more breaking in and maybe I'll get lucky and acquire some Lee "Can't bust 'em" pants (doubtful).
How's everyone else looking?

I just found the two hats I am dying. Somehow got buried within days of my last post. After trimming down the bill on each, I will repost.

I sympathize with you most sincerely. I sold my house last month and moved 11 miles east, and I'm still having trouble finding things...including my "Quint" cap.

Lest we forget that I have two test hats that I was about to cut the visor back. If you are needing a halloween hat, let me know. Only a few days left but I have the large and the extra large. If not a rush for halloween, I can finish by cutting back the visor and getting the front pocket stitching done. Let me know.
