Re: Mass Effect 2 - M8 Assault Rifle

Really an awesome build up, thanks for sharing the hows and how-not's of your build.

Re: Mass Effect 2 - M8 Assault Rifle

my first post...on this board.

I saw this link on facebook.

I LOVE Mass Effect, and I would pay for that type of quality....I would literally hang that on a wall.

Amazing work! Looks great. Nice balance on the weathering.

I know it costs a little money so not much good for a scrap build but you can buy a purpose designed sealer in the uk for MDF that allows sanding and painting without getting the fluffing. Have got some but never got round to using it.

Keep up the great work.

Amazing! Details, the instructions/explanations, the pictures... I must get myself a larger, thicker bib to handle my drooling. Really magnificent work.

Wow, thanks for all the compliments guys! Traffic kind of spiked on the thread after Bioware tagged it on their facebook page... I guess I'm being watched!

Spent a LOT of time weathering the rifle today. I recorded the entire process, which I'll be putting together in a little time-elapse video later. I gotta say though, anyone expecting magic to happen might be disappointed. My most used tool is a paint-soaked wet paper towel.

First I laid out the vinyl templates and painted on all the lettering with testors enamel.

Here is the "technique" I use for these guns. Mostly, it just involves mixing a good brown out of acrylics and painting on very thick coats over the panel lines. The wet paper towel mentioned earlier is used to wipe the excess away from the seams and dab it around the gun to give the metal some depth and texture.

After a couple of passes, you get something that looks sort of like this

I did this a few times. I also ran across a rather fortunate accident when making my stenciled letters. With the painting technique I did for the silver color (multiple types of spraypaint) if you put vinyl over the silver and pull it off quickly, it emulates a nice chipped effect by only pulling the top clearcoat layer off. You can see this around the lettering in this shot.

The rest of it is mostly old techniques. Drybrushing silver and the like. On the front grips, i did peel back the plasti-dip a bit and paint the uncovered areas silver to look like tears in the material, like below

And a few more shots. I need 6 more allen screws before its all finished and ready for a fancy shoot, so i'll have better pics later. Until then, enjoy!

Start to finish, weathering took a little over 7 hours. I'm beat.

Re: Mass Effect 2 - M8 Assault Rifle

After showing this piece around a bit, a lot of people (my wife included) seemed to think I overdid it on the weathering a bit. My favorite comment was "I don't think I'd trust the fate of the universe to someone who doesn't know how to clean their gun."

Good point.

So, this morning, I knocked it back a little bit. The paint chips and silver scratching stayed, but I pulled the "dirt" off a lot. I like the end result.

Re: Mass Effect 2 - M8 Assault Rifle

awesome work!
for your lettering, do you make your own for most pieces? or do you buy premade vinyl stick on lettering?
