Modelling the Elysium Carlyle Droid SMG

OK. More work, and much RE-work on the rear grip attachment thingie.

This is a base part that I think is heading in the right direction (the very orange part, NOT the grip to the right).

soooo.... another take at the rear grip part thingie:

better (mostly as I think I can do more stuff on it in the future and it wont go wonky). for sure. more work required.

Right. Found some time to modelling of that rear stock/thing/part whatever it is. The orange bit.
Here's where it's at. Still not perfect, but I think I'm going to try to get on with OTHER parts for now. This could be sanded down to be more or less correct. Thing is, there seems to be at least variants: what you see on the original designs (very clean), what you see in the gold robot pics (droid rifle) which is messy, not smooth, maybe damaged?. I figure the original was somewhere in between.

So. Better. More progress.
But I've spotted that I've made the end too long. Dunno how I managed to miss that.
I'm considering going on, perhaps with a view to re-doing this part at the end. I'll only do that tho if I can correctly model everything else off the main body. If this part is wrong, I don't want to be using it as a reference point!

2nd image shows a quick correction to the text position, and properly rounding the insets on the rear thingie (orange thing behind the grip). Man. Going to have to lookup the names for these, instead of calling everything "Thingie".

First manual eyeballing. I mirrored the "Rear Thingie (tm)" and positioned similar to the photo.

Looks... ok? I think? I was worried that it's too think.
If anything tho, It looks a mm or so too thin.

The distance between the "flats" where those triangle inserts are is exactly 45mm (blue arrow indicates where)

Left side in progress. No circular "greeblie" thing, and there's another 'slot' inset into the side. Got it :) Also, there's a couple of line details that exist on the RHS, that do not exist here. Got it. Shown without the other half of the grip-handle. Text also corrected for left hand side (so it's not backwards, yay!)

As I've been drawing, I've been thinking: how am I going to print this?

It's ~580mm or thereabouts. Most of us are going to have to split the model. Hmm.
I see the body being split into three parts. So it can be printed. Here I mean splitting starting at the front (shooty bit), with three split across (into) the body of the rifle, towards the back (stock bit). I'm assuming here the grips, and rear thingie (tm) are printed separate.

Also though, I see it's nicely split right down the middle. Two clamshell halves if you will. Here's an example:

So we could print SIX parts and bolt them up, because:

I also see that there's a TON of M3 sized fixing holes. I love the idea of being able to use some drop in fasteners (3d printed drop slots), and bolt it together. Just not sure how that's going to work out if the entire body is split into three sections. I'm worrying that the stressed (fixed with bolts) sections will crack any paint/joiner in between.

Thoughts and ideas welcomed. Please.

Front grip. Its needs some finessing, but managed it inside onshape rather than having to surface model it in blender. Unsure if it was quicker or not (it's a pain to do).

Currently working on the sight. The LAST piece! (before I have to go and a) fix everything, and b) figure out how to split/join for printing)

This part, while fiddly, has so far been easy enough. Lots of detail, but none of it particularly hard to pull off.

Annnd, done, I think. I've hollewed out the inside, so you can put electronics in there. There's also a spot for a micro USB port for charging.

And FINALLY. Base modelling is complete. I still need to do fixes + split + join things. But YAY, the base model is done!
(actually, and this *always* happens when Im posting pics), I just noticed the charge handle is missing!
