When I heard about the decommissioning of CVN-65, I obtained permission from the US Navy (Via the U.S.S. Enterprise's Public Relations Officer) to do the following painting:

Pengbuzz - very nice work. Question, though - under what circumstances would you need the Navy's permission to do a painting of one of their ships?
 
I had used a photo taken of the ship for reference, I wanted to secure permission as I did not want to rip off the photographer's work. Since this was a photographer who was in the Navy when they took the pic, I asked the Navy's permission.
