Actually it reminds me a lot of the Andy Probert design for a TMP phaser.

THe curvy and chrome aspects are reminiscent of the Galaxy Quest "Thermian" version of the Nebulizer.

The "cowling" bit is similar to the Star Trek V/VI Assault Phaser.

I actually think given a better picture, it could be cool looking. Still doesn't fit, but still could be cool looking on it's own. And it's probably half barcode scanner and half salt shaker. So it will be easy to make.

Anybody know what prop shop did these?

Take this for what it's worth, but an insider claims there was no saltshaker used in the construction of McCoy's scanner and it's all custom.

As big a ST fan as I am, so far this dont look that great. The props look to be off, the uniforms look like colored thermal underwear, and as to the Enterprise her self, its pretty bad...Kev

I think there's a bit more to the emitter that's blending in with the back ground. I was playing around with the photo and it looks like a round emitter poking out to me...

EDIT- Now that I look at it, it kinda looks like there might be a phaser one up top.
