ORCA scratch build

Flimsy, did you do the orca in 1:8 scale or 1:9? The figures are scaled kinda in between…I was just curious which way you went on the build. I have no words to express how epic your endeavor is…this is a dream build for me. Hopefully I don’t muck mine up when I attempt it.

Micheal these are the keel and bulkhead patterns I used for my build. The PDF IS scaled up to 1/9th scale or a 56" long 18" wide boat. You have my permission (if you want) to use them. The PDF I had printed out, I traced the form to wood with graphite copy paper. I did the same with the keel. (forgive me, but I don't remember the enlargement percentage use for the keel) The keel should be 56" from bow to stern.
Hope this helps start your build. As Filmzy said to me when I started,
Welcome to the Rabbit Hole" LOL.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! That will be a great help and I’m grateful!

Hi just seen this , I didn’t go with ether scale. I draw the hole thing full scale so I could use real world object in an assembly, I the used Quints ( Roberts) IMDB hight. To come up with a factor to reduce the model in solidworks. As all productions are now on hold including mine I will be at home, so can work on my own jobs for a wile and will tell you what that number was. But as you say it isn’t 1:8 or 1:9.

I’ve thought of trying to do that same thing actually, using Shaws height of 5’10” to try to scale things out. My problem is I have the desire but lack the skills to use programs like blender or cad or DELFTship…they just totally confuse me. I have the skills to build, but when it comes to computer stuff I may as well be trying to decipher alien technology. I will get to my goal somehow eventually…

It is an odd scale as I've based it on Quint being 8" from 5'10" so I've reduced my full-size models by 0.114
that gave me a Bruce of 34.2" if it was 25ft.
I have worked in Imperial only because any hardware would have been in feet and inch's.

So as you have all probably heard work has stopped due to strikes. ( Just so I'm clear I'm on the writers and actors side against big brother)

So its time to for fill my promise to myself and make a better ORCA.
There's nothing wrong with the model I have but wile doing my research I kept finding things I hadn't got right and as I had such a good time making the last one why not try and get it right. I still don't think I will or can even say it will be totally accurate as that's not possible without having exact dimension. So all I can do is use as many real work thing as I can as reference. hence buying more odds and sods. I've got very reliable barrel dimension now and I managed to get a cooker, bell, Morse engine control.
The last one took me 4 months lets see if I can beat that.

Good God!!! The amount of information you have on those files is staggering! Now I see why you said you needed stronger glasses. This boat is going to be SOoooooooo good! And BIG! I did catch something. The main control panel......it's in 2 pieces. The gauge side and the throttle side, both hinged at the top. The video was so fast (for good reason) I wasn't sure if you had figured that in. Christmas is in 5 months, might as well use the time. Sniff, Sniff.......I can smell the laser cutter and 3D printer now! LoL

Got ”hooked” into reading through your Orca thread again. Read the latest update and back to the beginning I go. Happens when unique subject selection, incredible reference work and skill come together to produce such a beautiful model. One wants to enjoy the story again.

Based on the dimension of my real Morse throttle against this photo. this time I'm starting with all the props and working backward
that way I know things will fit in the right place with the right spacing. Yes, I got the hinge.

I went back to the beginning as well, it's funny I remember the morning I woke up and said I was going to do it. posting on here has left me
with a very interesting record of my journey into madness. which makes me think a PBR form apocalypse now might be my next. No No stop
I still have Kermit and spinner mark 2 to finish.

Looking into your madness flimzy is a real pleasure:cool::cool:(y)(y):notworthy::notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:
Nice way to characterize your observation of this model builder’s passion. Fortunately, for me who likes to look into “the window” he opens, this model builder is not alone in his skilled fetish. There are others to appreciate.

Flimzy Is female, and joberg was alluding to a post where flimzy herself called it (this project) her journey into madness, in a response to you I might add.
Please keep up.

Woke up this morning and said lets have a go at sculpting Bruce in Blender as I do need to make a remote control version at some point. this is only my second go at sculpting. and yes I did notice I missed one of the fins out so went back and put in in wile the video was uploading.
