Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

So Alexandre Desplat is out as far as the score goes and Michael Giacchino steps in to score the movie.

I love me some Giacchino (Star Trek excepted - I've never liked that theme) but this change seems very last minute.

Sounds like the reshoot schedule pushed the scoring schedule too late for Desplat to do it due to other commitments. Well, we have all been wondering/hoping Giacchino might step in and here he comes!

Let's also note that THR confirms extensive reshoots and issues Disney/LFL had with the original version of Rogue One...

Rogue One underwent extensive reshoots this summer that saw writer Tony Gilroy take on a filmmaker role during the shoot and the postproduction process as Disney and Lucasfilm sought to clarify story and tonal issues for the pic that is set to open Dec. 16.

This was subject to much debate earlier in the thread - and surely not definitive. I'm more apt to believe THR (and the other sources that covered this initially) over EW - which is more in need of the Mouse and LFL's approval to get cover stories, exclusives and that type of stuff.

"..as Disney and Lucasfilm sought to clarify story details and tonal issues..."

Has that ever been confirmed by a credible source? (not sure what a credible source might be, lol).

I don't know, it still feels like they are just aping what was speculated before with no clear evidence beyond rumor.

It depends on your definition of credible. There are plenty of sources that reported this - the changing of the movie's composer and The Hollywood Reporter's story might be the most telling piece of the puzzle.

This is a positive change for me. I love Giacchino's work. Of course, I liked Desplat too.

I had always figured Giacchino was heir apparent to Williams for Star Wars. He did the arrangements for Star Tours when they re-did the ride at Disney.

Michal Giacchino arranged the queue music for the updated Star Tours, so he is not entirely unacquainted with Star Wars scores.
I love Giacchino, but wow, I despise this Muzak interpretation. (It doesn't help that it's all synth.) I'm going to hope that he was just giving Disney what they wanted, and his R1 score will rock.

I'm a little concerned in that he mostly does "fun" scores---even his The Incredibles score, which I LOVE, has a lightheartedness about it, even at the height of its John Barry-ness. I need to listen to his Trek scores in isolation, because I don't recall being impressed during the films. I don't much care for new Trek, though, so that doesn't lend itself well for appreciating one aspect of it without making a point to observe it on its own.

One thing I can safely say about these "other" star wars films. I pray they always stick with orchestral music. I never want them to shift styles from that. That's what grounds it in the same galaxy

If Rogue One was made in 1979, we'd be hearing this...

I'd love it to break the mould, new & fresh

I did not want to post this before because it is so much an advertisement, but anyway ... Does not look like synthesizers to me... ;)

Each piece of music was paired with video of a certain Star Wars location to be shown as an advert for travel to that location. The line to the ride was made to feel like a waiting lounge at a tourist spaceport. That is why it was made upbeat, like airport muzak and not dramatic.
