SALZO "Hero" SS X-Wings

^ Right.

When a delay happens, as did in my case for a couple of unforseen personal situations that arose, it's up to us as builders to stay in contact and update those who entrust us with their projects. Going completely silent or coming back with excuses time and again sure doesn't help.

Kurt is very easy to do this work for as long as he knows what's going on. I suspect that's the case with most of us. However, it's all too easy to abuse this kind of trust.

Well said, Rich.

Kuhn,

I don't know about two years but 6 months doesn't sound that long to me.? Man, if you want an total and screen accurate model, weathering matched and all it takes time. Sometimes I don't think people who doesn't build stuff them selfs understand what an incredible amount of time and labor that goes into an accurate representaion of a SS model. Sure, a quick build that has the over all feel of the original subject is a piece of cake but when every singel scratch and soot spot got to match (some people demand that when they commission a builder) now that's a whole different story.

Personally I never accept any cash before the project is done and has been seen and approved by the client but that's just me, others do it differently. I sure have taken my time to finish stuff, first of all because I'm VERY picky when it comes to the details but also because I'm not a frickin paint droid. Even if you take commissions you're still entitled to a private life. Also, working under extreme time press probably will result in a sloppier built model, at least thats my case. If I don't have fun working on a project it will show in the end result. Once again, that's just me. Then one also has to concider the health risk involved in this projects, most non builders tend to overlok this issue or doesn't understand the dangers of resin dust, thinners and paints. Even if you use a mask it isn't very healthy to be exposed to this stuff for 8 hours a day.

Well, this is just my oppinions.

Steve.

Kurt-

I can't weather for ****... I leave weathered ships to people who have the talent to do realistic weathering. Otheriwse believe me... I would love to take one on but with what these cost, I figure I'll spend a little extra to have a pro do a weathered ship.

I felt much more comfortable with the TIEs since they weren't weathered. And I am good also at doing the electronics for simple lighting jobs like the TIEs (and I'm getting my Y-Wing electronics installation prepped to install after I have Dean do the paint and weathering job I'm close to sending off to him.)

But thanks for your encouragement.

If I got one of these, I would want to entrust the paint and weathering to a pro. And to be fair, the guy who did my CC one did a great job after I gave him every reference to Luke's Red 5 that I could find. But his communication wasn't the best and I was seriously convinced at one point after several months of no return e-mails that I was screwed. And in the initial talks when he wanted the commission, he had promised 6 months tops.

So if I did put money towards one of these, I am sometimes gun shy as to how long would it take someone to do the buildup and painting and weathering if I commissioned them and paid upfront as I did with the other. I can accept six months, acutally, if it took 8 months, if the person told me upfront I would accept it. It's just being told one thing and then something else happens, and with these time frames... it does seem ridiculous. I know stuff comes up, I sell costume leather gloves and expect them in a time frame from my glovemaker that sometimes gets delayed because they have other work and it's such a short run it goes to the back burner, but the wait there has never been more than 3 months and I try to keep my glove customers abreast of what's happening.

I was trying to ignore this thread and be happy with what I have, but the nosecone is the most glaring thing that stands out to me. If I could get a nosecone to replace the one I have I could live with it so I'm hoping perhaps upgrade parts might be offered for those of us who aren't too picky about the other details. Since I am going to drop in a different cockpit tub at some point also when Bobbyfett over on Starship Modeler starts casting them, I will be doing some changes I think I am capable of.

WOW... bummer Jerry... this really surprises me. :confused With all of your talent,... why did you pay someone else to do it?. You have a great talent Jerry... especially in that area. Was it a time factor for ya? This leaves a question burning in my mind.... if a talent, like yours, wants someone else to do a build-up.... who would you go to that would do it better than yourself?

I would love to see you do an X Jerry. I have very much enjoyed viewing your work so far. :thumbsup :) :thumbsup

You make good points Steve.

I know your work and have admired it... you are great talent. :)

Individuality and thought is something the world has in abundance... and most peoples views will never be the same.

I am definitely not sying that people who do commission work do not deserve their personal lives and should not have fun with what they do. As a matter of fact I fully support that. :p

I believe we are speaking of two totally different types of people. The "time managers" versus "the care free" types. The "care free" types do things in their own time with disregard for those who they've promised something to,.. and have fun doing it until it catches up with them. The "time manager" type makes time for everything in life and still has fun doing it. As a matter of fact,.. the "time manager" tends to accomplish much more and in much less time,... be it in their personal lives or business lives. The downside to that IS that one must be a very certain type of person to be a "time manager",.. other wise stress takes over and early death is eminant. :unsure Truth be told... I was "care free" at a time in my life and ended up in the gutter. This is not to say everyone does,.. but I did. As I stated... we are all better and more capable than we all give ourselves credit for. There is much talent out in the world, but most don't care or are too lazy to find out what that would be in themselves... lol...especially here in the U.S.. LOL... Anyone that travels will know this to be true. My 'time management" allows me to enjoy these beautiful models that are created by some of that great talent. LOL...Imagine what would happen if a kid came home from school and did their home work first,.. then had the rest of the night to play and relax.. with no stress since they're complete. Now imagine if your car broke down and you had a commuting job. You take it to your mechanic and he states that it will take him a week to complete, but then you are made aware that he maybe took 3 hours to fix it in the end and that he was playing Golf the rest of the time because he thought he deserved his personal life time. This being different only in the way of being an emergency of course, but in the same light. To answer your statement,.. yes.. I well know what it takes to complete one of these builds in order to be better than Studio quality and expect more than some put in. The people I work with now are "time managers" and are getting things done to my expectations... and theirs. They are only held up when they must deal with the "care free" type. For instance... having to wait for a promised part to arrive from someone who probably has it,.. but is just not taking the time to send it.

Anyway...blah blah blah.. everyone knows my thinking...lol.... and I am babbling now. :lol

Bottom line Steve is that you have good, valid points and I respect your opinions. :) They just differ from mine. ;)

What are you working on currently? I would love to see what that may be. :thumbsup :thumbsup

Anyone have a build of Mike's Hero X yet? :confused

Kewl Jerry.

I am not sure that replacing the nose cone would do.. as the fuselage and nose cone in the new kit are both much beefier that the CC kits were. It would require more in modifying your current kit than I believe you would want to do.

I still would love to see ya do one of these. :D

I just got my copy of this kit today and it is every bit as fantastic as the pictures make it seem. I posted pics of mine on my site: http://www.starwarsmodels.com/xwingcch.html Check it out. The changes really make it bulkier and it really feels more like an X-wing. Mike did an awesome job with it. The casting is really, really crisp and it looks like it's going to be a breeze to put together. Two thumbs up to Mike on this one. You can contact him at salzo1@aol.com for ordering and price. :)

Hi Bobby.

I think we need to start a new group. "Propoholics" Anonymous.

Will your new cockpit tub fit this hero X-Wing? Do you know when you may be cranking them out too?

Kurt-

I am thinking if I can find someone to do a good Red 5 buildup of this new kit I could put my old CC on E-Bay and make up the costs.

LOLOLOLOL... "Propoholics Anonymous" indeed. LOL...

Jerry I have Bob doing all three of the HERO X's that mike sent me... one of which will be done as Red 5. So there is another option for a build-up for ya. However... I would still love to see you do it. I have faith in your abilities man. You can definitely do this. Just look at what you did with your TIE collection.

Use the Force Jerry...let goooooooo....

AHH MAN... did that just come out of ME?.... LOL... just call me Mr. Cheese. ;)

Bobby Fett is doing your buildups? Or is it another Bob? I would like to PM whoever it is since I will probably bite the bullet and get one of these in another week or so when I get paid.

Hey Jerry,
Shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you a pic of the pilots. They are modified 1/24 Harrier pilots. To be honest, though, I prefer the original Luke pilot. From what I understand, the Harrier pilots were what was originally used so it's accurate I guess.
The cockpit I made will fit. I sent the master off to be molded and cast so they will be available soon from SSM like I told you in that PM a while ago.
I can't wait to get started on the "Hero" kit but I'm working on 2 SS comissions (1 X 1 TIE) right now so I don't have the time...yet. :D

Glad to hear you got your kit already, Bobby; that means mine should be on its way soon. Mike mentioned that he re-mastered the engine intakes, too - can you tell us what's different about these parts?

Hey Kurt,
I don't have many pics of the SS stuff I am working on right now, just a few pics of the cockpit I scratched for the X-wing:
