Scratchbuilding 33 inch Enterprise

More on the hull, I am using blue Styrofoam insulation that I found on the side of the road to fill in the gaps. Then I will further fill with dry wall compound, sand then put fiberglass cloth over. This is my first scratchbuild, so if anyone can suggest anything please say it. Also his thread should probaly be moved to studio scale as this model is a 1-1 scale representation of the 33 inch filming model

That's always been my understanding; the rear section of the nacelles is ribbed, along with the vents on the sides at the rear.

Comin' along pretty good, btw (just saw this thread). Love that someone else is tackling the 33" model.

Thank you. It is a challenge, I've started using fiberglass Kevlar body filler left over from my truck to fill it in. The saucer is going to have to be layered about 1/4 inch thick with fiberglass cloth cause of a printer error. Pictures tomorrow.

I can't tell from the pictures or the plans, but are the things on the ends of the nacelles ribbed?
I'm leaning towards the ridges being there... but they should be understated. That is to say, they shouldn't draw attention to themselves. If the ridges were prominent, it would have made the rear nacelle caps appear darker than the rest of the model (which is not the case).

Here are some larger resolution images of the model.

When I drew up the plans, it was easier to not draw them in... and at the time I didn't have higher resolution images to work with so I wasn't leaning towards their inclusion as much. I'm not sure I'll be drawing them in on the revised plans either... but I'll most likely add a note about them.

The ribbing on the rear box structures does appear to be more prominent (deeper ridges), so you might want to take that into account when building those parts.

What are the differences on the 33 incher between the pilot and production? and was there a difference in the model between the 2 pilots?

That is a difficult request without posting diagrams, but I'll give it a try.

First (and easiest), there was no difference between the first and second pilot version of the 33 inch model. The main changes to the 11 foot model were the addition of lights, but the 33 inch model was solid wood, so that was never an option. Additional differences...
  • The 33 inch model had the same general window pattern as the 11 foot model from the first pilot (the series update mainly added more),
  • It had the larger sensor dish, the domes on the front of the nacelles were solid wood with spikes,
  • The rear nacelle caps had a rectangular feature (best to use Jefferies' original plans to match it),
  • The grill features of the inner nacelle channels weren't there originally,
  • The four white rectangles on the top of the primary hull were not there (those were access holes on the 11 foot model to change out bulbs, and weren't part of the original design),
  • A lot of the markings on the top of the primary hull associated with the 11 foot pilot model weren't there on the 33 inch model (except the markings on the bridge), and
  • The pilot version font was used (and the arrangement was similar to that of the 11 foot pilot model).

Also, the bridge didn't change size or shape. While it was originally shorter than the 11 foot pilot bridge, it was also taller than the 11 foot series bridge, so no change was considered necessary when the model was modified.

The original markings were painted on the model, but the later markings were decals (basically a one-quarter scale printing of the 11 foot model's decals... including the reversed numbers/letters). Datin still had a sheet and scanned some of them for his site (here and here).

I think that covers most of it.

Of course there is also the bluish dorsal as well... but it was so light (compared to the hull's gray) that most people don't even know it was there. :confused

S6 was the model entirely repainted after the pilots, because I'm thinking that with the use of magnets or something I can make my model interchangeable. If the paint job was different though that would make that impossible.

I knew that this was here! The work on the saucer and secondary hull is progressing quite nicely. Have you made much progress on the pylons and warp engines? Also, what source did you use for the decals that you have positioned over the saucer? My Enterprise is going to be pretty close in scale to yours, and I bet those decals will fit the bill. Hoping to see more of this build soon!

Looking forward to more updates! :) I don't understand it - the TOS might be simpler in design but my yearning for a 33-inch is greater than my eagerness to build my 1/350 Refit.

Had to scrap the old secondary hull. I will never use dry wall compound again. This time It will be foam core board glued around a PVC pipe.
