Sideshow Golden Fertility Idol Review

Hey GJ,
Good question. I too am a little unclear as to which idol the prop store is.

The Mr. THX screen grab is the same idol with the moving eyes. If you watch Raiders, watch the eyes very closely and you will see them move side to side ever so slightly. As far as I know there was never any other idols that were screen used that had glass eyes in them. I think we are still unclear to where the second idol with glass eyes came from.

Either way, these all came from the same mold.

And since I have a Gobler I can see, in person, that the mouth shape can look different from different angles.

Hi all,

The Prop Store idol is not the Idol seen in close up in the film. That Idol may be the one in the Lucasfilm Archives (which has been restored), although I believe others have pointed out that the hairline does not match entirely.

The mouth on the Prop Store idol is identical to the re-plated LF Archives idol. As mentioned by others, it does appear to be slightly more "frowny" when viewed from a lower angle.

The Prop Store and LF Archive Idols are a different sculpt to any of the replica Idols that have been produced, all of which are based on the alternate "frowny" style sculpt.

Also someone mentiond the Majestic. A fun fact I was told by someone who worked on the film - director Frank Darabont wanted to put the Raiders Idol on the Sand Pirates film poster, so he called Spielberg to ask permission, and Spielberg said "of course!"

Best,
Brandon

Hi,

Sorry if I have missed something, so is the Prop Store Idol actually used in any of the Raiders scenes or is it a production made never seen on film idol? If that makes sense?

Thanks,

GeordieIndy

While we are unable to screen match the piece, we believe it was used in scenes in the film, and may have been the one in your avatar GeordieIndy - possibly with the eyes plated over, and the pupils painted on (there is evidence of plating on the eye surfaces).

Regards
Brandon

This is one thought I have had several times myself but have never read any evidence to back it up.

If I am correct, the idol I have as my avatar is the idol that Indy picks up off the pedestal just before running out of there, and in all of the information I have read this would make sense and answer a lot of questions...

However my avatar idol's baby is quite different in sculpt, I will see if I have got a better picture!

GeordieIndy

Thank you Brandon for chiming in. I would love to see some close up pics of the eyes and internal pics if you can.

Did this idol sell yet?

I really appreciate your input.

As you may know Golden Idol lore is my passion...my obsession really. ;)

As promised a larger picture of my avatar:

What do you think about the child sculpt compared to the Prop Store Idol, the same or different?

GeordieIndy

Though your picture is a good quality, detail on the child is hard to see because of the angle and reflection of the gold plating.

Here is a thought, we all speculate that the eyes were plated over on the stunt idol and then the pupils painted on but could the glass eyes have been plated over and then the pupils scraped away to reveal the glass eye pupils?

Also, I wonder if the Prop Store idol is the stunt idol?

I know what you mean about angles and light...

It just shows when you see the archive idol from this angle:

If you were to throw some different light on it, cast some shadows etc and it changes everything....

So the stunt idol is the one Indy grabs off the pedestal, then hands over to Satipo and then Belloq gets his hands on it. Right?? Which we are thinking is the Prop Store Idol...

GeordieIndy

p.s. Sorry for throwing all this into your Sideshow review Brad, but thanks for all the info, and thanks to you Brandon also!!

I received my Sideshow Fertility idol a few days ago! I love it even if it's not 100% accurate! It looks great displayed right out the box which is perfect because I don't have the ability to make my own from a resin kit nor do I have the money for the patience to wait over 2 years for a Gobler run!

I know I am bringing up an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone knows if the Prop Store still has the idol or if it sold??

I would love to know who has it and if we could ever see it side by side with a Gobler Idol...

Thanks,

Andy

I've got one of those $100 gift cards from Comic Con, which brings this well into the range of "too affordable *not* to get it".

:-D

Beware!!! I bought # 1139/1500 and absolutely loved it. Then one unfortunate day it fell and cracked the bottom left foot completely off. :cry
So I thought "No biggie, I'll just replace it." And I received # 1258/1500. I was wrong.:eek The gold plating is completely different than the one that cracked. #1139 was shiny, reflective, and stunning. #1258 is dull, matte, and makes me think "cheap". Too bad really cause #1258 was barely unboxed and stored. And since I really liked my #1139, I pieced the fragments back together and did my best to make it as unnoticeable as I could, just so I could use the better looking one for my display.
