Soviet Union Suitcase Nuke

Yea after sum searches it does look like this is a mock display of the ones lost by the USSR.

I did stumble across this:

Which is more of a "backpack nuke" than suitcase.

As well as an American made Suitcase nuke from 1988:

I think I am still going to complete the mock case just out of my love for the old USSR and the sheer awe that nuclear weapons bring. ;)

I think for a prop group, we could come up with something a whole lot cooler/sci-fi looking for a suitcase nuke. I've actually got an old metal camera case (about 20 x 14 x 10 inches) sitting around with nothing to do... might be kind of fun to build. Lots of blinking lights and a countdown timer and maybe even some moving parts (like the wonderful A-bomb in "Goldfinger")... all that impractical and un-necessesary stuff that make movie props so much fun!

From everything I've read, a U-235 "suitcase" style bomb would be several hundred pounds, thus making it almost impossible to carry around, and still would give anyone who carried it for long radiation poisoning. And as has been pointed out, probably wouldn't work, as you need a certain minimum amount of uranium to make a big boom. Now, a radioactive dirty bomb (no thermonuclear explosion but lots of scattered radioactive material) is more than possible in a suitcase type bomb.

Isnt there a nice suitcase nuke in the movie "The Fourth Protocol" with Pierce Brosnan and Michael Caine?

That would be a better thing to make, since it *is* a movie prop. :)

isn't there another film where a kid makes one out of a 'uranium liquid suspenson' (which looked a lot like dawn dishwashing liquid with sparkles added to it?) and a camera flash?

here's that 4th protocol clip

looks more like a pool filter ..

I think that would be "The Manhattan Project" from the 80's.

I remember reading awhile back, that it is completely possible for someone to build a nuclear bomb out of every day items, it's getting hold of the Uranium that's the hard part.:cool

But WOW that Fourth Protocol mini nuke is serious! Lots of machined parts and metal stock gonna be needed to reproduce that!

You could get pretty close with two plastic bowls, a handful of bolts, a piece of pvc, a gas cap, and some chrome paint.

Hi Homeland Security! Don't mind us, were just talking about prop replicas! :angel

Exactly what I've been thinking through this entire thread.

I would be extremely cautious about replicating something like this, where you display it/who you show it to, and especially showing it off on the internet for "all" to see.

I've had my run in with Homeland Security and they don't give a rats behind about prop replicas, costumes, or intent blah blah blah.

Is there anyway to get details on that so as to not have the same thing happen to anyone else?

I recall one needing U-235 to make a proper nuclear device.

Also, I find it interesting that this thread is still open. I started a thread awhile back looking for high strength resin and it got shut down in less then 3 hours because of how many federal agents were viewing it... or thats what I gathered from the message I received from the Mods anyway.

I guess resin = bad and suitcase nukes = okay? :lol

Waa? :confused Why on earth did they want a thread on resin closed??? :confused
