Star Blazers - Space Battleship Yamato live action movie

Oh god, had to happen. All right, I'll bite. Yamato's wave motion gun is pretty bloody powerful, but it's hard to imagine her defeating an 11-mile-long Executor-class command ship.

However she does have endless self-repair capacity, so the command ship couldn't defeat her, either. I call stalemate. :)

For me, the real question is this: will we get a new 1/350 kit, with all the more realistic live-action movie detail?

Stalemate?! A well crashed A-fighter took down one of those babies - the wave motion gun would melt a super star destroyer in half like butter.

Don't know what you mean. They built some models, but never filmed any actual sequels to Star Wars. :p

Sure, the Executor starts to win, things look bad for the Yamato. It then fires the Wave Motion Cannon, which has taken out PLANETS, and it destroys the Executor. The Yamato flies out of the Executor wreckage completely repaired.

She's the same size as the real WWII battleship. About 800 feet, versus eleven miles.

<sigh> It's long been a truism in versus debates that the SC Yamato would flatten *anything* else. :\

I usually moan and groan at remakes or adaptations... well pretty much every new movie that comes down the pike... :lol

But this looks awesome!!! :eek :D

I grew up on Star Blazers and the Force Five series! 7:30am before grade school!

The characters (from the terribly brief clip) looked spot on! The ship opening up its arsenal looked fantastic! Wave motion gun interior detail? AWESOME!!!

I wouldn't even care if it didn't have English subtitles! :lol

Can't wait! :thumbsup

Oh come on, why not? If they think there's a market for it, they'll do a movie version. It may be wishful thinking to hope for another 1/350, but who knows, perhaps they can even dress up the existing one with some new parts and etch frets. Deleting some of the gimmicks would be nice too, especially if it brought the price down.

This looks so awesome. Tears came to my eyes when the main theme started after the interior shot of the wave motion gun.

Correct. And the ship, apparently, is actually broken in half. If memory serves, the Yamato's main magazine blew, which would likely have torn the thing in two. Suffice to say, she won't be back to fight Dessler Soto any time soon. ;)

(sorry, but Star Blazers was after my time -- I only know the story as Uchuu Senkan Yamato with subtitles)

Spot-on, Solo. Tore her badly in half, she's really a twisted mass of wreckage these days, her bow folded back in on her. I have the Anatomy of the Ship on Yamato, but I wish Ballard would do one of his nice pictorial books on the three sister ships, construction to wreck. That would be awesome.

AFTER your time? But you're a young'un, how is that possible? Got to say that USY with subs is *slightly* less un-rewatchable than Star Blazers, though. :)

Gah. I meant before. Chalk that one up to waking up at 2:30 am for no freakin' reason and having to spend an hour trying to get back to sleep.

I'll take your word for it on the Star Blazers vs. Yamato rewatchability. I'm enjoying rewatching USY right now, though.

Although I too complain about remakes, I'd be fine with a redone version of the show with modern animation stylings. Not that I don't still love the old school version, though. It's interesting to see how anime has changed in 30 years.

Know the feeling. It's after 1AM here on a work night and I still can't get to sleep, despite being a zombie all day from lack of sleep last night. I hate summer, it was freaking 39 degrees yesterday and that's what's expected tomorrow too. Going to roast, and sleep won't be easy.

Anyway, yeah, I meant the Japanese version with subs is far less awful, though still pretty hard to re-watch after all these years. I think you took my meaning as the opposite? I even cringe a bit watching SDF Macross, these days. :(

Ahhh, gotcha, I misunderstood you.

Star Blazers likely suffers the most from its sanitization for American TV. (IE: toning down the death/destruction)

The animation is indeed clunky. Same with Macross. But I still love 'em in spite of that. I wouldn't mind seeing redone versions with newer animation (but the same old voice tracks), but I'm happy with what I have.

Both have problems with the "fan service" stuff. That gets a little dull for me. Ooh look. Yuki got her skirt flipped up by Analyzer. How titillating. >yawn<

Macross suffers primarily from the presence of Minmay, but she's inextricable from the story, so we're stuck with her. At least the Minmay of Macross is less annoying than the Minmay of Robotech.

Regardless, I still love both shows and I have not seen a cooler set of designs than the old Macross Valkyries.
