The Hot Toys Black Ed-209 - Restoration Project **23rd March - 99% Complete**

Re: The Hot Toys Black Ed-209 - Restoration Project **10th Feb - Update**

Ooh... I like it! Though, visible wiring is probably not that smart with a combat robot. Though... the designers weren't really that smart to begin with having that huge air vent at the front of the head... so... it makes sense. .)

Combat Robot, more like Comedy Robot!!!

I'm not sure about the yellow wiring, i may have to change that, it sticks out way too much, mmm, i'll leave it until it's complete then see how it looks!

G17,

If you don't mind an opinion.....I think it looks way better without the wires, less cluttered. If you insist on having "wiring" then how bout something that looks more like industrial stainless steel braided cable or tubing like they use for show cars for oil or fuel lines? Just a suggestion of course
I was also wondering if you removed the cloth looking material with a feel of rubber from the head before priming or did you just paint over it? I can't tell in your pictures. Here's some pics of mine.

I can see where you are coming from, but i like the wires personally.

Have you seen the stop motion puppet, its covered in wiring down at the feet, its a real jumbled mess.

Like i said i think the yellow wire doesn't sit right so that may be replaced with a black.

I like your idea of the braided cable, but we are looking at very small gauge / diameter wiring here - so getting something like steel braid is difficult.
I was on the lookout for some, as it seems there are braided cables liking one of the gun arms, but again it's finding the stuff, we're talking 1mm - 2mm!!
I was just going to paint some wire silver, or do something clever with some solder - although its maybe a little soft, which is great for giving it detail but rubbish when it comes to staying unbroken!!

G17,

My other question was wondering if you removed the cloth looking material with a feel of rubber from the head before priming or did you just paint over it? I can't tell in your pictures. I think I may know where to get something that looks like tiny braided cable.....if I can remember where I saw it then I'll let you know. I did have one idea though...you might check jewelers suppliers and look for cheap gold or silver plated chains that resemble braided lines which you could always repaint. If I find anything I'll post it for you here.

Re: The Hot Toys Black Ed-209 - Restoration Project **10th Feb - Update**

Yes i removed the rubber canopy - Which is solid (but flexible) rubber

However the previous owner who sprayed ED-209 with a gold / bronze undercoat and then black, hadn't been too careful and had managed to get a lot of over-spray on the canopy.
It was a bit of a mess actually, and looked like a goner!
As was all the rubber parts, covered in paint which was brittle and flaking!
I wasn't holding out much hope, but i decided to give cleaning them up a go, and used the same chemical (graffiti remover).
As it turns out, this worked an absolute treat and has removed all of the paint, leaving me with clean flexible soft rubber again, woo hoo!!!

I've been thinking about the braided cable option myself, and possibly some silver (nickel?) wire stands simply twisted tightly may give a good braided effect, you know with the strands being really fine, almost like the width of a human hair (well maybe not that thin, but you know what i mean!!)
I'm going to give that a go and see what the results are, will post a few pictures hopefully of the results.

G17,

Still.....try checking out jewelry suppliers. I've seen round thin plated chains that looks like braided lines. When I can find an example I'll show you.

Pop to your local craft shop or costume jewellery shop. You can buy either decorative string/elastic as used on greetings tags which looks like armoured cable or some costume jewellery chains are likewise.I have used these to super detail lots of kits and looked superb on the ABC warrior from Judge Dredd

Here's a couple examples of chains that look like industrial lines or maybe Derek's idea might be better.

I also need decals for mine before i can weather it.
I didn't know the horizon kit included decals. Mine didn't anyway.

Keith.

I don't think they did. I think someone made these to use for various versions of kits available... there were for various sizes. Unsure whether there was one for sixth scale, though I doubt it as I would have saved that one. Found it while looking for reference when I owned this piece that's been so beautifully restored.

I bought a set of jbot decals for my horizon kit. I think he has 1/6 scale ones too, but i don't think i'll bother ordering from jbot after hearing a lot of people have had problems with him.

If anyone has decals made up in 1/6 scale, i would be in for a set.
Only thing is, i don't think it will be quite as simple as making them in 1/6 scale, as i would bet that a lot of the decals wouldn't be the correct size.

Keith.

I hope you don't mind if i use this thread as reference to make my old Kenner toy more accurate once i figure out how to get it apart. Sadly i can't afford the hot toys 209 at the price it's going for now so i have to make due lol.
