The Ultimate Marty McFly Jean Jacket Lining Thread

Wow... What is up with the BTTF community? If it's Time Machine builders or Marty costume researchers you guys are all in competition with each other and not sharing the info publicly for the benefit of all. Thank God the Star Wars, Blade Runner, Indiana Jones communities aren't like that. In those groups if someone finds a source, they immediately share it for the benefit of all. In the BTTF groups, rarely does anyone share anything...

Not true at all. I have heard of SW members who have sat on info for YEARS before releasing it. Usually to acquire said items before the bidding wars begin. If you haven’t experienced that you’re lucky.

Unfortunately, most of that is due to a member of the community who is banned from the RPF who likes to make up stories and pretend he has knowledge he doesn’t about the wardrobe.

People became protective because releasing any information would make you a target for him to harangue and tell you you’re wrong. (As he’s currently doing to me in a Facebook group)

I like to share what I can, when I can.

When I discovered that Marty’s Jeans were Guess Style 1050s I shared that immediately.

When I discovered that Marty’s undershirt was a Royal Comfort brand shirt, I shared that immediately.

But because London Moore beat me to the punch here and found this before I did (even though we both found it separately) I deferred to him on what he wanted me to say when I went public with my finding.

He asked that I not reveal the brand, which I respected because I respect him.

But since other people have now independently found the source shirt, I’ll say it was a Dolce Vita brand shirt.

If we could shed a single member from the community, more people would share more openly. But most people just don’t want to deal with him getting in his feelings because he’s cranky he doesn’t know something first.

Who knows, maybe the paisley will be next...
It would be awesome to find the original source of the Paisley fabric, but the print you had made looks pretty spot on to be honest! I still need to get my hands on a couple yards of both the Hollywood Stars & Paisley liner fabric.

Another jacket liner fabric that needs to be identified is the yellow/gold Bamboo Print inside Doc's part II jacket.

The celebrity lining is about to get an update based on new reference.

I don’t know if there is a more appropriate place to share my findings so I will just post this here. I seem to have discovered the origins of the Guess Football Player fabric print used on their 1986 Jacket Liners.

Coincidentally Micheal J. Fox was throwing a football around on set in the same style jacket this liner would come with the following year.

After some research I’ve learned that Guess actually took that artwork of the Football Kicker from a painting titled ‘The Punter’ by Joseph Christian Leyendecker that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1908. I assume the copyright had expired by 1986 so it was a royalty free image.

As it appeared on the cover of the November 14th issue of the Saturday Evening Post in 1908.

The digitally remastered version.

Guess actually added the number 86 to his jersey, which stands for the year these particular jackets/liners were made as you can see by the copyright ©️ 1986 on the bottom right. They also made two versions of this image with different logos; GUESS jeans & GUESS men, with some differences in the triangle stamp as well.

Since the jacket Micheal J. Fox wore was Youth sized and definitely not Men’s size, in addition to his Guess women’s Style:1050 jeans;
I decided to use the “GUESS jeans” logo and do my own take on the liner artwork just for fun. :)
I call this one ‘Marty McFootball’

I made Marty look painted in honor of Joseph Christian Leyendecker’s original artwork that Guess used, also I obviously changed the font on the word “Times” and took the copyright back to the year ©️ 1985 ;)

Now I wonder where this Motorcycle Rider image originates from, Guess definitely took it from somewhere and made their own addition to the jersey once again.

Where is this from, anyone have a GUESS? Likely something old and royalty free like the Football Player painting.

I'm gonna say it again. London is such a helpful, friendly guy. He's helping others with his material to make sure there is reference for others to make their replicas. It doesn't get much better than that.

London Moore was gracious enough to remove the liner and have it scanned in a flat bed.

London already knows this, but I’m working on a version for print from his image. Here’s a bit of a tease. Still lots more work to do and need to figure out how to put it up for sale without tripping over intellectual property issues.
