Hahahaha. Could you imagine a viral video of George going to town eviscerating the Holiday Special with various tools? I would pay for a ticket to see that!

My view on the SEs/DVDs/Blu-rays that have officially been released has always been that I don't really care what Lucas thinks is the "official" version. I actually kind of enjoy the "Let's see what's different with this release!" game, and it's fun to pick out the minor changes here and there (which exist even in the pre-SE phase primarily in the form of altered audio). Go ahead and keep tinkering if you want. It doesn't bother me.

But give us a truly preserved version of the original theatrical releases, capable of being viewed on modern displays. I don't even care if the TIE Fighters have matte boxes around them and the sabres get wonky when the point is aimed at the camera. Tweak those if you want or leave them exactly as they appeared in '77, '80, and '83.

I don't understand it even from a business sense. If you can make money releasing both then why not? Release the SE version and a properly restored theatrical cut. Directors and studios do it all the time. I bet it's just a way for him to exert some sort of control over his creation and nothing more.

Plus the idea that the SE is his "original vision" is utter nonsense. Which of the multiple SE versions is his "original vision." By default they can't all be the original idea. I'd be happy if he just admitted that he just kept changing his mind. Thats the real reason he kept tweaking it. I mean the guy altered it in 2011 with the Blu-ray release the year before he sold off his entire company.

As much as i'd like the OOT released properly, i think people seriously over estimate how much money it'd bring in. It's a small group of people that interested in it.

Okay, WHICH theatrical version do you want? There's the 70mm print version. Then there's the two 35mm versions, with either a Dolby Stereo or mono audio mix. They're all different. Everyone acts like there's a definitive version of the original theatrical release version of the films (particularly ANH), which just isn't true. The closest we can get would be the THX version prior to the Special Editions. That "version" released in 4k might be close in terms of narrative structure, but modern audio standards would once again invalidate it's true accuracy.

I get your point and it's a good clarification. At this point I'd take any one of them :)

I have the laserdisc tranfsers on DVD from 2006. If I could get a cleaned up bluray of those or 4K version I'd be very happy indeed. I'm not super familiar with the differences between audio mixes like the mono mix vs the stereo mix, though you do raise a good point about the variations that have existed since the film's initial release and which version should be used as the master to restore it.

I just don't want all the crappy changes like Greedo shooting, and Vader yelling No and all that crap in there. Those are the changes I could happily live without.

But as much as I would love a properly restored version, or even a restored laserdisc transfer, I can live with those 2006 editions if I have to.

I have no interest whatsoever in the Adywan or other fan edits either. Those are just as glaring as the special editions themselves and while I can applaud their talent, they are still just fan edits that don't look right to me.

Alas I can dream!

The Despecialized are a great gap filler.

The differences in the releases pre 1997 are minor with the addition of 'A New Hope' being the biggest I can think of. To suggest a mono print in 2019 shows the weakness of the argument.

I was merely pointing out that given multiple iterations of the "theatrical version", a definitive version may be hard to pin down. Not everyone saw the same version in 1977.

The best course, I think, would be the THX home video issue as the template or jumping off point. And a discrete "remixed for 7.2 surround" soundtrack would be a bonus feature, not the default. If we're being true to the original, anyway.

You are right. I'm sorry. I went and educated myself. Please put me down for anything before 1985.

List of changes:

It's the obvious CG enhancements I don't like, they stand out & cry 'Look at me, I'm new!!', I'm not that fussed which version I'd like,..(with or without the Ep4),....just without the CG, I'd like to see & hear the films original effects that won all those Academy Awards

I've only watched the despecialized for the last 6 years or so. Even so there is a CGI shot of X-wings left in that bugs me every time I see it.
I assume that if Disney sees profit in restoring and distributing an OOT "theatrical" cut they will. This all about business, not film or art preservation.
From a purely business point of view it would be a bad idea until they've finished they're latest Skywalker fanfilm. Maybe a few years after that but I don't see it happening until they've milked out every other drop of nostalgia cash.
Squeeze it faster and more intensely! ;)

Well, at least that was a practical affect... :)

I agree with this, except the version I'd want of what is now known as "Episode IV: A New Hope" would also not include the extra scenes that weren't in the theatrical versions--Han Solo meeting Jabba the Hutt, Greedo firing on Solo in the Cantina, and so on.
