X-Wing Studio Scale Options?

I have spent the last several days reading the various threads in the pinned X-wing post in this forum.

Good info, but, most if not all that info is old and out of date, pics are long gone…

I would like to have a studio scale X-Wing for display, and I am currently wondering what options are out there to still get one? I should add I am aware of the discrepancies that existed between the original studio models, I am not a rivet counter, I am looking for something that has an overall, great appearance. If I was to choose though, I would like to model Red 5.

I have tried 3d printing one and it was a horrible failure. I just don’t think my printer is big enough to handle the task.

There is the Revell 1/29 kit that is close in scale, but I am not sure how good of a studio scale representation that kit is.

I am aware of the fine molds and bandai kits, but that scale is too small.

What threads I have found that reference things like ‘Mr. Cardboard’ or ‘Salzo’ have no links and Google searches are not turning up any useful information.

So of what is out there for a Studio Scale X-Wing, what is still in production, available and of a decent quality? I seem to be about 10-15 years behind the curve here.

I feel ya. I came a bit too late to the party as well. Missed out on the Salzo V3, Captain Cardboard, etc... There is Nexus Models, who make a very nice SS X-Wing, but it's a bit pricey.

Have you heard of the Scifi Studio Scale Modelers group on FB? They are making a 3D printed X-Wing in 1:24 scale right now, based on this model: STAR WARS X-WING - | 3D Print Model

I guess he (Dominic, the one who 3d modeled the above x-wing) has partnered with the SS guys so that they print/sell his models. They are doing that with his TIE Bomber as well.

Anyway. I'm just as interested in hearing what anyone else says. I'd love a SS X-Wing.

Ya, I am a member of that group. They have some cool 3d Models. I also found a resin version from Larson Design, it seems nice is around $300.

I missed out on the Salzo V4 by a few months, and have been looking for one ever since. The key thing that's hard to get/make/model, is the fuselage body because of all the compound curvature and the different variations between regular, pyro, and hero versions. The wings and greeblies are fairly straightforward, and I've been collecting those for a while now, so have enough to make at least one, possibly two X-Wings. So if anyone knows how to make the body, or has 3D files that are for sale, I'm also very interested. The other thing you definitely want to get are Mike Reader's machined metal wing armature, to achieve the perfect S-Foil opening/closing and to prevent wing sag over the years. Last I knew he was still making those, and they are worth every penny.

So there are 2 scales considered Studio Scale for the X-wing, one which you are speaking of which is 1:24 scale and what most of the resin and now 3D printed models are based off of. The other is a 1:43 scale MPC model which was used in filming on ROTJ. That one is still available to be purchased and is actually the same model used for filming. Thread below for further reading:

I was reading up on that one. Initially I was interested but then as I read about it’s inaccuracies it somewhat turned me off of it. I know there are upgrade parts out there, but then I am in the cost range of most of your garage kits….

There’s a guy on eBay selling Capt. Cardboard kits, but you’re gonna be hard pressed to find any Salzo kits around.

I was lucky years ago, obtained and built 6 of them for my collection.
My only suggestion is to keep an eye on the Junkyard here, and a few other modeling sites. You might get lucky.

Any body knowhow to contact Mike Reader? I would love to get one of his machined metal wing armatures. Thanks in advance.

The MPC model was seen on screen in ESB/ROTJ. There are no “inaccuracies.” It’s probably the only 100% screen accurate X-wing most of us will ever own.

I've been working on one.

Risking even mentioning it, I guess. Don't want to jinx it. Anyone who's interested - please be patient. Lots of things to figure out. But I've made a ton of progress.

That lower picture I "know" is a real photo, but I swear it looks like a picture of your desk with a photoshop of your CAD file transposed on it -- Gorgeousness and Gorgeosity!

The Korbanth is from the ICONS pyro molds, a standard which has long since been far surpassed, but it is indeed an option.

I have no experience with the Korbanth T65 kit, but I did buy a T70 kit a few years ago. The resin quality was abysmal.

That may have changed.

I never liked the MPC kit. The only positive experience I had was when I was in college in the 90s. I had very little money, but lots of time. I bought one at a show for about $5 and spent months to a year modifying it. The only thing I had to go by where picks in the SW Technical Journal and other pages from that big ILM book from back in those days. I did not so much make it more accurate as make it look better. Sliced up the lower fuselage and reshaped it, shaped the torpedo tubes, added lots of custom details-greeblies, made custom laser cannons from different tubes of copper and aluminum, custom-built the cockpit, custom built the landing gear (I pose almost everything on the ground), and replaced the rear engine portions. A labor of love. But even the over all shape always bothered me. Are there side-by-side comparisons with the (cough-cough) studio scale X-wing with the larger studio scale models? If I had a choice between an MPC X-wing and a similar sized FM or Bandai X-wing, I would not get the MPC. I know the OP asked about SS, but my guess is that he was also thinking about the SIZE of the kit. Once you get down to a (roughly) 48th scale X-wing "for display," as he says, might as well get a high quality model kit of that size.

By the way, I see a few on ebay right now, but I'm not sure if they're studio scale or just 1/24th scale. I get the feeling the sellers are being very selective with their language, and also not mentioning which kit it is. I think most of us would like to see Salzo V4 or something. One is priced at $300, buy it now, which strikes me as low.
