Re: Y oh Y oh Y

struts are indeed landing gear from the Bandai 1/24 Messerschmitt Bf 109 E4
Boxes are from Tamiya 1/35 Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf M/N

I once had all the donor parts for that assembly (including the Kettenkrad hook thingie on the end)--sent them to a fella to cast, and his wife threw away the envelope with the parts still in it. :cry

Lots of good info in the old Y-Wing building thread, guys. :)

Thanks Jay, what a gutta about the parts, I've been through that thread on & off for 2 weeks now & I still come up with something new every time. I'm a complete nob when it comes to kits so its long up hill slog for now!!!!

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Guy, I hope this doesn't irk you terribly, but you cut way too much off of the 25 pdr field gun on the back of the head... Let me find a pic to show you what I mean...

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Actually, I misspoke, because as far as I can tell, the entire piece in question is used.

In the attached picture, the top Y is an MR, and you can see the same detail from the piece shows up on the studio model (bottom). I don't have any better reference than that of the studio model itself, but I am fairly sure it's the whole piece that's stuck on there.

Other than that, your Y looks absolutely excellent! Great Job!

I thought that I had read sometime long ago that the Panzer III parts had a spade head (shovel blade) stuck on the back as well (taken from panzer pioneer tools). Other side to the struts. Is this rubbish or kosher? :confused

By the way, beautiful job on the Y Guy .....:lol But seriously, you are nailing it. I love that beast.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

No, there was no spade on the box. The kit has two boxes that are very slightly different, but the difference is something that could be sanded off if I remember correctly.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

If it helps, this is the MR Y master pattern - as it was submitted to them. Trust me, it is NOT accurate to the Red Y (on which its dimensions are based) but it may help on general part ID and placement.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Thanks for this pic it has been a real big help.
Sadly yet again disaster strikes back! I just got my 25pdr & the first piece I cut off the the tree goes under one of the kitchen units to the land of never never so!! I'm leaving it off & cracking on ahead, I'll just add it later when I get another?

I've applied my White base coat (rattle can) got up this morning to look at my nights efforts and all over the model are hundreds of tiny fish eye's, the primer went on fine, the black coat went on fine but the white!!!!! Y oh Y oh Y. It's in all the nooks & crannys. Stripping this is not an option, I'm giving it another couple of coats to thicken it up then light sanding back, I'll have to cover up with good old weathering. Well its supposed to look 30 years old anyway!! One day a build will go well for me? I hope, some pics to follow shortly.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Guy, If you're really unhappy with the paint application including the primer try using 2Hr 'easy off ' oven cleaner!. This stuff is incredible for removing paint, been using it to strip my Tie Bomber, it takes a few goes but the results are worth the trouble to get back to a fresh canvas!.

Only Tamiya white fine primer from the rattle can seems to put up some resistance but eventually does come off.

Just a thought dude, and hey Iv'e not seen any one of your models turn out bad, your painting skills are much admired!.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Thanks Stu, I think i can get away with it, its only up real close that its a problem now. I've gone over the rattle can base coat white with a new blend of my own Tamiya mix & it's come up a lot better. I will take you up on your suggestion if when the weathering goes on it looks naff. Cheers mate.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Guy, you greatly improved your kit ! Im not an Y-specialist so I cant tell you if this or that part has been cut correctly or not but I can tell you it looks great !

And your "sealab cranes" are just perfect and will do the trick nicely !

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Thanks mate, I'm gunna class this as my 1st Y so its a learning curve, I've done more kit stuff with this than ever before. I'm pretty chuffed with the Sealab part scratch, there looking quite nice if I do say so myself.

Shots with flash so all the color is a bit off & intense, its not as orange as it looks promise!!!!

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

Looking sweet Guy!. I must say your chipping effect is most realistic, you've nailed that to a tee dude!.
I'm tempted to post my Tie Bomber to you for a 'Guy Cowen' professional paint job bro, but no I'll nail it one way or the other lol!.
Iv'e followed alot of your builds Guy and always find your painting tips to be most useful and informative, so looking forward to this one progressing.
Bring it on!.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

I.ve decided to start again on the cockpit, went overboard on the weathering & worked on it tired, oops.

Re: Y oh Y oh Y

That looks great Guy, I really like that faded rustyness you've got going on.
