30 years!? That would make me...old. I was there when ESB opened in Bakersfield, California, third in line. Not hard to do; just showed up three hours before showtime.
I will admit that ESB was a "better" movie, in terms of maturity and complexity and technical proficiency, than "Star Wars" (iI's Star Wars and always will be Star Wars, no ANH nonsense for me, and that has to be the worst title of the bunch--would you go see a new space movie called "A New Hope"? I thought not.), but SW is still my go-to movie. It's the one that brings me the most joy and holds the most sentimental value for me. It's the one that changed my life.
And if Irvin Kershner was such a great director, explain "Robocop 2." I think Kersh got Robocop 2 on the strength of ESB, but IMO it was Lawrence Kasdan who really made ESB what it is. Anyway...
