Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/18/11)

Newb here with a question: You said in an earlier post Rondo,..was this a spelling error and was meant for Bondo. If not could you please explain. Going to try to make a Warmachine pep build for my son and doing all the research I can before I start.
TIA

Rondo is what they meant.
it is the technique of using a mixture of the fiberglass resin and the body filler and pouring it inside of the helmet and slushing it around untill it is hardened:thumbsup

yup it is rondo. It is a mixture of bondo and resin, not as strong as fiberglass mat but still does the trick as a base hardener. Here are some video tutorials from sir kagn.

ooooh great work man.

That's definitely THE best war machine helmet file to use as a base. Keep going!

thanks sir stealth. glad you liked it. :)

unfortunately i am having some problems which look or helmet design to follow :( for example, the trail lines above the ears, the holes on the cheeks.
here are some updates..
did some detail lines and attached 4 magnets(yes the backplate gainted weight due to rondo.) and also started the base barrels for the minigun. :)

i have several problems with the chin part, but i am happy and contented with it(for now :lol) and i'll try yo stay as accurately close as i can with the helm.
and still having problems with pinholes and scratches from sanding :cry

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

what grit sand paper are you using? 320 is the heaviest you should use right before primer..... as far as pinholes, the next time you put primer on, lay it on heavy to were its about to run and smear it with your finger..... sounds ridiculous but i'm speaking from experience, it works....

Yes those are the best videos i found on the net to follow for rondoing instructions, and they were made from our very own Benstreeper here on the rpf, he has alot of easy to follow vids, Quovadis that helmet is just looking phenomenal, if you are having any problems with your edges you can always go back and add a lil bondo to them and sand it down to sharpen them up, Great work my friend!

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

i use 580>120>primer>1000(i don't know much about sanding papers just read the numbers on the back of em') ok sir i'll try that once all the pinholes has been covered thanks for the tip! :) but i have 1 big problem,i don't have an air compressor for painting so i use a brush.:(

thanks again sir kagn, yeah i am having problems with edges. I'm thinking of cutting the mouth cover for now so the edge sanding will be easier, but then again it might make the helm a little less sturdier. Oh btw, regarding the vids you sent me,hope you don't mind if i share it with others to help. :sleep

ok time for updates..i pepped the ears this morning and finished it by the afternoon. Hopefully it'll be painted by the coming week or so..also installed the hinges. Whew. I'm pretty excited to finish this one. :rolleyes

P.S: Nevermind the audio..:)

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

Awesome work so far!
I watched a vid today from Stealth on how to use Smoothcast 321. I think Im gonna go that route. Its gonna be for my 10 yr old so it wont have to me prefect. Although I am a perfectionist and my own worst critic.

First use Smoothcast 321on the outside.
Paint it on , it doesnt take much. Apply 2 coats.
Then put Smoothcast 320 on the inside.

I found the link to the vids on a Bing search about using Smoothcast, but I belive it was posted on a thread in the 405th

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

You should show us a couple more pics of those lovely hinges :love

Okay,so i looked over a couple of high def pics and reinspected some pep works with the pep i'm using and i think i have a problem :(

Below are the comparison shots of the helm i have and the helm SupermanGT made.(thanks for the pic btw, helped me a lot sir SUpermanGT)

any ideas? :(

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

Please DO NOT DO THAT!

Your pep is perfect. The only reason it looks different from his is because of the angle of camera and the distortion that shooting photos to close will cause. It is the same pep file and you both pepped it correctly. Please don't change it.

Your friend,
Jordan

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

NO QUOVADIS your helmet looks fine!! Jordon is right it is the camera angle, if you brang the chin out that much more on your helm it would look like a circus sideshow warmachine, everything you have done so far on the WM helmet has been excellent

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/18/11)

I've used binder clips in the past to hold all 3 pieces together of my Iron Man helmet.. but the resin always seems to seep into the cracks and sticks all 3 pieces together.

I've also tried to harden before with binder clips but once again it always seems to leak into tiny areas and thus melding all 3 into 1 piece. I really want to keep this in 3 pieces during the resin/hardening and rondo/sanding/primer stage as I want to mold and cast a 3 piece out of plastic.

What route did you take. P.S. I have pics of my old Iron Man helmet that I started, didn't finish and sold.

J
I used some wax coated playing cards, it stuck a little. But with a little elbow grease I got the face plate to separate.

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

Are you looking to other models and works to find a solution to a problem you have?,.. Or are you just happen to be looking and you dont feel they look the same? Yours looks great to me, but looks aren't everything. Only you can hold it in your hands and feel it on your knoggin. If it doesnt fit right thats one thing, just be careful chasing perfection.

Great work so far.

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

okay guys thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I thought i needed to elongate the chin more to expose the lower chin but i found another solution, the faceplate positioning. :) I'll talk more about my mod once i'm done with it. Still, thanks sir Kagn, sir Jordan and sir LeDragon for the kind words. Without those comments i must've cut off the jaw and proceeded with my idea, good thing you guys posted! :sleep

anyways, about the update. I was re-reading some threads here and the 405th and I got interested in sir Maulfett's lighting system and studied it a bit. My friend here helped me with the idea and here's the outcome. :)

Re: quovadis' warmachine attempt.(update 01/29/11)

very nice quovadis, i love the video, did you use metal contacts to complete the circut to turn the eyes on when the helmet is closed or does the face plate push down on a button, either way great job
