Mad Max: Fury Road Costume Thread

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road Costumes Thread

Hey guys,

The big day looms and anticipation is now at fever-pitch. Don't know about you, but I can hardly sleep. I am doing a photoshoot as Max for the local press on opening day.

But ... back to the business at hand.

Got myself some German WWII jackboots that look fabulous with harnesses on. Really weathered ... as in REALLY weathered over time and use and not just battered around by me. Problem is ... I can't get the bloody things on. They are my size but the leather is so mummified that it has shrivelled back and tightened. At present, In have soaked them in Neatsfoot Oil, which has certainly put some zest back into them, and softened them up, and I have lumps of wood and old VHS videocassettes wedged inside them to stretch them out even more. I think it could work in time for the opening. Failing that I have German tank boots as a fall-back. They look pretty good actually ... just a bit shorter.

I have tailgate hinges for a customised brace - not the correct ones, I might add, but they will do for now.

Drop-leg holster, M83, knife etc are all sorted.

The jacket is coming along nicely. Really beat it and the leather pants up - Hardy's look almost grey and ashen. Took the sleeve off and left the flap. Sliced away the zip from the remaining sleeve. Going to put Bear-claw's rips into the shoulder and the square patch on the sleeve, and as much stitching as I (or the wife) can manage. And I have Karol's new plate and pad winging their way to me across the Atlantic even as I type.

My question is, though ... should the lining be removed from the jacket altogether? The jacket looks slim-line and flimsy on Nux ... and yet it looks bulkier on Max, as though it still has the lining in. Your thoughts, troops?

Pics when all this is sorted.

I don't think the lining inside the jacket is removed. There are some photos and screenshot where you can make out the lining in all 3 movies that use this jacket but just glimpses. Tom Hardy is more bulkier than Nicholas Hoult so he fills out the jacket more which is why it flows more when Nicholas is wearing it.

You can make out the lining here.

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road Costumes Thread

This whole thread has been amazing. I'm so impressed with how much of this you've accurately tracked down.
I have a question that google hasn't been able to help me with, and I haven't seen answered yet.
That scarf/infinity scarf/hood whatever that Tom Hardy is wearing in that picture of him in front of the motorcycle. What is it? Has it been sourced?
It's similar to something Mel had in a Thunderdome article.

I don't know if any of you ride. But when you wear that kind of MC Jacket, you often get a lot of wind down your neck. A scarf like that makes a lot of sense.
(On my MC jacket, I could zip the collar up, but it chokes me a bit, I really love the look of this scarf or whatever it is.

To me it looks like a Shemagh Skarf like the ones used in the middle east to cover your head from the sun and keep sand out of your face.

Hi, I'm a bit new to costume making and was thinking of attempting a Mad Max Fury Road costume, but just a basic version, I've seen recent posts where you discuss the shoulder pad, is this something I can buy instead of making?, even if its not an exact match, what would I search for?
cheers.

Not bad at all, Ryan. I think it overall looks good but if there is still room for improvements I did some comparison shots for you if you want to make these a bit more accurate. First I would like to point out that I also agree that the extra rivet in the top front is probably in Road Warrior too seeing as it's covered by the flap but visible in Thunderdome and Fury Road. I think you did a good job with the thickness of the padding covered in leather. They both look pretty thick in Thunderdome and Fury Road and I think yours matches pretty well. Only thing I would improve is the rough cut on yours. It's a clean cut for both movies.

Pad%20Compare1A_zpstciwanjb.png

For the back of the pad I highlighted the stitching so you can see the spacing from the end of the pad to the stitching. There's more of a gap between them when compared to the screenshots.

Pad%20Compare2A_zpsjbzic3ya.png

Also on the back, the rivet on the top left corner could very well be in the correct placement for Thunderdome on yours as I have not found any good screenshots of it but for Fury Road it's a bit higher and closer to the padded leather right on the stitching. Doesn't look to be touching the leather either, just a slight gap between it and the stitching. But again this might only be for Fury Road. If you do a Fury Road pad you might need to shave down the padding in this area also so it's not so wide between the end of the pad to the stitching.

Pad%20Compare4A_zpszoo9atm9.png

The front stitching I think you did a great job. The spacing between the rivets and stitching seems to match pretty well.

Pad%20Compare3A_zpsc2eaonqg.png

For the top right rivet though again when compared to Fury Road the rivet look to be more closer to the end of the pad. On yours I think the pad might need to be trimmed down some since the spacing looks a bit wide between the rivet and the end of the pad, or maybe the stitching would need to made at at a wider curve to get it closer to the end on the pad. You can see what I'm talking about here.

Pad%20Compare5A_zpsnizzozqu.png

I know these are going to vary from one to another since it's hand made so non are going to be perfect. Just thought I'd point out these details out to you. A template could help too if you want to get the stitching and rivet placements the same with each pad you make. Anyway hope this helps you out or anyone else who plans on making their own.

Cheers Fabian!

Yep, it's pretty clear that the lining is still there. It's just getting so damn near to the release that I'm getting jittery about final touches. As it is, I'm going to have a stew of Maxisms going on. The bosun whistle in the boot harness from Thunderdome and the mini music box and blonde streak from MM2. Maybe even the red rag hanging off the sleeve. But everything else will be Hardy.

The press preview in the UK is scheduled for 6.30 pm on the 13th in London, Leicester Square. I got the invite because I review movies for AVforums ... but that's only the evening before I see it in Liverpool with a proper photo-shoot!!!! I can't really justify travelling down and staying over - even for an event such as this. The bloody press embargo has been a real pain in the ass. I know loads of people have seen it already in the States ... and it's just so frustrating.

Had it been the red carpet premier I'd have been there like a shot.

Cheers

Chris

Yep, my money is on it being a Shemagh. I've tucked a green and black one into one of the pouches of the M83. Just in case of a sandstorm in Merseyside!!!!!!! HA.

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road Costumes Thread

hey i didn t know i was about to go on trial for posting this ! LOL :)

jokes apart , i know the neck part looks clean on beyond , but i think it wasn t so clean in road , if you check this pic you can see that the neck back is quite rough (even if you should take a look at it on the blu ray edition cause this was the best i could find ) …… you can have a good reference too at the minute 0:56:12 ...i ve tried to take a pic of it but i couldn t ..... think they made it cleaner then .

w20zyx.jpg

here you can see that the upper rivet is on the left ( please don t take in consideration the fury references because the pad really is very different )..as for the stitches , it is the way i shot my pic that make it look that way , and maybe a stitch or 2 more ...if you check it good you can see that the design of the stitches is very close to mine , even the part where it goes up ( the end of the third lined rivets from left )

2zxz1mu.jpg

Same thing for the front part , check this pic , I don t see a big difference

Anyway I am glad you like it and thanks for the advices !! as everybody knows here there is always something to fine tune when it comes to a replica ;) , especially when they change little things on the same prop in every movie LOL :)

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road Costumes Thread

I have a question about the pants, there is a little logo sewn in near the crotch on the right side, I'm not sure if someone answered this already but "long time lurker, first time poster" so I haven't seen any mention of it, you can see it in the entertainment weekly cover. What is that logo? its too small and detailed to be a random repair, maybe a sig from the designer? or is it a manufacturer logo?

Also, the repair stitching on the jacket sleeve, a patch or just stitching to repair a rip?

I didn't mean to make you feel I was putting you on trail lol. Just pointing out the details to help everyone on here with accuracy. About the clean cut on the neck though. You have to remember these were from original shoulder plate pads so most likely they didn't alter the material there which is why they are clean cut, even for Road Warrior as you can see here.

There's no logo. That's just a tear and repair detail. I believe that detail is also seen in Thunderome. The repair stitching on the jacket sleeve is just that, repair stitching. No patch.

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road Costumes Thread

not completely sure they used it fabian , because if you check some old tutorial online you can see them using the rawlings pad but it has too much differences from the movie...even that part ...in the original rawlings the white neck part bottom is too large ....but maybe part you ve took a pic of is " all neck part " and cutted under the plate ( it could make sense ) or it is a custom made .... today i was watching some scenes of beyond...it is not so clen if you pay attention , but yes it is cutted more tight ...believe me , it is not easy to make that pad :)

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road Costumes Thread

Also wondering what the war boys pants like Slit an Nux are based on. Black. Combat pants or something custom made with extra pockets for tools and nitro bottles

I think Max's scarfs in the beginning and later scenes are likely just black cloth like in Thunderdome although worn like a shemagh or kefiya. I ride a motorcycle and they flap way too much in the wind at any fast speeds.

I also wonder if Max's shirt is just hand made by the costume dept out of a bunch of waffle weave fabric since they'd need a good fit and a few spares anyways

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road Costumes Thread

Here is my Max selfie. With all these close-ups of the pad, I can see a lot of imperfections in mine. Currently sporting a shoulder plate from Ryan 199x, looking forward to a release from Karol. If you have eyes like an RPF member, you'll definitely notice the size difference for the Schrade knife. It's huge.
